Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: We were young men with the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and we had nothing (means). The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O young men! Whoever among you has the means to marry should get married, for it is more effective in lowering the gaze and guarding the private parts. And whoever is not able to marry should fast, for fasting diminishes his sexual desire."

Alqamah said: I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) when Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) met him (at Mina) and said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! Would you like us to arrange your marriage with a virgin girl, who would remind you of the days gone by? Sayyiduna Ibn Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: If this is your suggestion, then listen, I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "O young men! Whoever among you has the means to marry should get married, and whoever does not have the means should observe fasting, for it will diminish his desire."

Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not permit Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz’oon (may Allah be pleased with him) to separate himself from women. If the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had permitted him, we would have made ourselves eunuchs (so that we would not even think of women).

Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When the matter of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz’oon (may Allah be pleased with him) arose, who had abandoned relations with women, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) called him and said:“O Uthman! I have not been commanded to practice monasticism. Have you become averse to my Sunnah?”He replied: O Messenger of Allah! It is not so. He (the Prophet) said:“Then my Sunnah is that (at night) I pray and I also sleep, I fast and (I also break my fast) I eat, I marry and I also divorce. So whoever turns away from my way is not from me.”Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) said: By Allah, the Companions had resolved that if the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) had allowed Sayyiduna Uthman (may Allah be pleased with him) to remain in that state, we would all have made ourselves eunuchs and abandoned relations (with women).

Sayyiduna Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him) says that (his uncle) Sayyiduna Aqil bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Basra and married a woman from Banu Jusham. According to custom, people congratulated him and said: «بالرفاء والبنين» (that is, congratulations on your marriage with hopes of goodness, blessing, harmony, affection, and sons). Upon this, he said: Do not say this; the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade us from saying «بالرفاء و البنين» and instructed us to say: «بَارَكَ اللّٰهُ لَكَ وَبَارَكَ عَلَيْكَ» , meaning "May Allah bless you and may blessing be upon you."
