816/1065 (Sahih) From Ubayd ibn Umair: That Abu Musa al-Ash'ari sought permission to enter upon Umar ibn al-Khattab, but he was not granted permission—and it was as if Umar was busy—so Abu Musa returned. When Umar was free, he said: Did I not hear the voice of Abdullah ibn Qais? Allow him in. It was said: He has already left. So he called for him and said: We were commanded to do that(1). Umar said: Bring me proof for that(2). So he went to the assembly of the Ansar and asked them. They said: None will testify to this for you except the youngest of us: Abu Sa'id al-Khudri. So he brought Abu Sa'id. Umar said: Has something from the matter of the Messenger of Allah, peace be upon him, been hidden from me [هذا] ? The trading in the markets has distracted me. Meaning: going out for trade.

820/1070 (Sahih) From Sahl ibn Sa'd: That a man looked through a hole in the door of the Prophet, peace be upon him, and with the Prophet, peace be upon him, was a comb with which he was scratching his head. And the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Permission has only been prescribed because of the sight."

821/1073 (Sahih li-ghayrihi) from Ubayd ibn Umayr(1), from Abu Musa who said: I sought permission to enter upon Umar, but I was not granted permission—three times—so I turned away. He sent for me and said: O Abdullah! Was it hard on you to wait at my door? Know that it is likewise hard for people to be kept waiting at your door. I said: Rather, I sought permission to enter upon you three times, and when I was not granted permission, I turned back He said: From whom did you hear this? I said: I heard it from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: Did you hear from the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, what we did not hear? If you do not bring me proof for this, I will make you an example! So I went out until I came to a group of the Ansar sitting in the mosque, and I asked them. They said: Does anyone doubt this? I informed them of what Umar had said. They said: Only the youngest of us will go with you. So Abu Sa'id al-Khudri—or Abu Mas'ud—stood up with me and went to Umar. He said: We went out with the Prophet, may Allah bless him and grant him peace, when he intended to visit Sa'd ibn Ubadah, until he came to him. He gave salam, but was not granted permission. Then he gave salam a second time, then a third, but was not granted permission. He said: "We have fulfilled our duty," then turned back. Sa'd caught up with him and said: O Messenger of Allah! By the One Who sent you with the truth, I did not hear you give salam even once except that I heard it and responded to you, but I wished that you would increase your salam upon me and my household. Abu Musa said(3): By Allah, I was indeed trustworthy regarding the hadith of the Messenger of Allah, may Allah bless him and grant him peace. He said: Yes, but I wished to verify.

825/1077 (Sahih) From Abu al-‘Alaniyyah who said: I came to Abu Sa‘id al-Khudri, and greeted him with salam, but I was not given permission. Then I greeted him again, but I was not given permission. Then I greeted him a third time and raised my voice, saying: Peace be upon you, O people of the house! But I was not given permission, so I moved aside and sat down. Then a boy came out to me and said: Enter. So I entered, and Abu Sa‘id said to me: "If you had increased (your greetings), you would not have been given permission." Then I asked him about the vessels, and I did not ask him about anything except that he said: "It is forbidden," until I asked him about the jaf. He said: "It is forbidden." Muhammad said: "A lead is placed on its top, and it is tied."
