It is narrated from Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say: "Actions are judged only by intentions, and every person will have only what he intended. So whoever's migration was for Allah and His Messenger, then his migration is for Allah and His Messenger. And whoever's migration was for some worldly gain or to marry a woman, then his migration is for that for which he migrated."

Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) used to say: Tie the lower garment (tehband) and also drape a sheet over the upper part of the body, wear shoes, leave socks and trousers, mount your ride by jumping onto it instead of making it kneel on its knees so that your bravery and courage may increase, make the riding style of the tribe of Ma'ad obligatory upon yourselves, learn to hit the target, abandon luxury, indulgence, and the customs of the non-Arabs, and protect yourselves from silk, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade it and said: Do not wear silk, except for such a small amount—and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicated with his two fingers.

Anas bin Sirin says that once I asked Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) to narrate the incident of divorcing his wife. He said: I divorced my wife while she was in her menstrual period, and I informed Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) about it. He mentioned this to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so he said: "Tell him to take his wife back, and when she becomes pure, then in the period of purity he may divorce her." I asked: Did you count the divorce that was given during her menstrual period? He said: Why would I not count it? He said: If I had not done so, people would have considered me foolish.

Abu Al-Alaa Shami says that once Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) wore new clothes, and when it reached his collarbone, he recited this supplication: "All praise is due to Allah who has clothed me with such clothing through which I cover my private parts and adorn myself in my life." Then he said: I heard Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saying that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Whoever wears new clothes, and when it reaches his collarbone, he recites this supplication, and gives his old garment in charity, he will remain in Allah’s protection, in Allah’s neighborhood, and under Allah’s care in his life and after his death.

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila says that I was once with Sayyiduna Bara bin Azib (may Allah be pleased with him), at that time Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was looking at the moon in Jannat al-Baqi when a rider came and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) encountered him. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said Allahu Akbar and declared, "The testimony of one man is sufficient for the Muslims." Then he himself stood up, performed ablution from a vessel containing water, wiped over his leather socks, and led the Maghrib prayer. He said, "I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) doing the same. At that time, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing a Syrian cloak with tight sleeves, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took his hands out from under the cloak and wiped over (the socks)."

Abu Lubaid says that a man named Bairah bin Asad set out from a place called Tahiyah with the intention of migration. When he reached Madinah Munawwarah, several days had passed since the Prophet (peace be upon him) had passed away. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him and found him to be a stranger. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: Who are you? He said: I am from Oman. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Alright," and took his hand and brought him to Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: He is from the land about which I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: I know of a city called Oman, on one of its sides flows the sea, and there is an Arab tribe settled there. If my messenger has gone to them, they did not throw any arrow or stone at him.
