(Marfu‘ hadith) ‘Abd al-Razzaq narrated to us, Ma‘mar narrated to us, from al-Zuhri, from ‘Amir ibn Sa‘d ibn Abi Waqqas, from his father, who said: I was with the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, in the Farewell Pilgrimage, and I became ill with an illness that brought me close to death. The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, visited me, and I said: O Messenger of Allah, I have much wealth and no one will inherit from me except my daughter. Should I bequeath two-thirds of my wealth? He said: "No." I said: Half of my wealth? He said: "No." I said: Then a third of my wealth? He said: "A third, and a third is much. Indeed, O Sa‘d, to leave your heirs wealthy is better for you than to leave them poor, begging from people. Indeed, O Sa‘d, you will not spend anything seeking thereby the Face of Allah, the Exalted, except that you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel you put in your wife's mouth." He said: I said: O Messenger of Allah, will I be left behind after my companions? He said: "You will not be left behind and do a deed seeking thereby the Face of Allah except that you will be increased by it in degree and elevation. And perhaps you will be left behind so that Allah will benefit some people by you and harm others by you. O Allah, complete the migration of my companions and do not turn them back on their heels, but the unfortunate one is Sa‘d ibn Khawlah." The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, grieved for him, and he had died in Mecca.

If the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had permitted him in this matter, then we too would have at least castrated ourselves.

Ibn Muammar says that once ‘Amir bin Sa’d narrated this hadith to ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him)—while he was the governor of Madinah—from his father, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him), that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“Whoever in the morning, on an empty stomach, eats seven ‘ajwah dates from anywhere between the two sides of Madinah, nothing will harm him that day until evening.”The narrator thinks that he also said:“And if he eats them in the evening, nothing will harm him until morning.”‘Umar bin ‘Abdul Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) said:“Amir! Think carefully about what hadith you are narrating from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)!”He said:“I bear witness that I am not lying about Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), and that Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) did not lie about the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).”
