Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that once I was with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) on a journey when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me,“Mughirah, pick up the water container.”I picked it up and set out with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went to relieve himself and disappeared from my sight, so I could no longer see the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). After a short while, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and asked for water. He began to roll up his sleeves from his arms, but the Syrian cloak that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing had tight sleeves, so they could not be rolled up. Thus, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took both hands out from underneath, washed his face and hands, wiped his head, and wiped over his socks.

Hazrat Amir Muawiya (may Allah be pleased with him) once wrote a letter to Hazrat Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him to write and send something that he had heard from the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) directly, with no narrator between him and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In reply, he wrote: I heard the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that Allah dislikes three things for you: idle talk, excessive questioning, and wasting wealth. And the Holy Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has declared it forbidden for you to bury daughters alive, to disobey mothers, to withhold wealth, and to extend the hand of begging.

Hazrat Amir Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) once wrote a letter to Hazrat Mughirah (may Allah be pleased with him) asking him to write and send something that he had heard from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He replied that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) finished the prayer, he used to say: There is no deity except Allah, He is One, He has no partner, sovereignty belongs to Him and all praise is for Him, and He has power over everything. And the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade excessive questioning, wasting wealth, burying daughters alive, disobeying mothers, and hoarding wealth. The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were on a journey with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). In the morning, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) knocked on the door of my tent. I understood that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wanted to go to relieve himself, so I set out with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) until we walked far away from the people. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his ride and went to relieve himself and disappeared from my sight; now I could not see the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). After a little while, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned and said,“Do you have water?”I replied,“Yes!”and with that, I brought water to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and kept pouring it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) first washed both hands thoroughly, then washed his face. After that, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) tried to roll up the sleeves of his arms, but the Syrian cloak that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing had tight sleeves, so they could not be rolled up. Therefore, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took both hands out from underneath, washed his face and hands, wiped over the portion of his head equal to the forehead, wiped over his turban, and wiped over his leather socks, and then mounted his ride for the return. When we reached the people, the prayer had already started, and Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) had led one rak’ah and was in the second rak’ah. I started to go and inform him, but the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped me, and we performed the rak’ah that we caught, and whatever was left, we completed it after the salam.

It is narrated from Hazrat Mughirah bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) that on the occasion of the Battle of Tabuk, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) dismounted from his ride and went away to relieve himself. After a short while, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked,“Do you have water?”I brought water to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and kept pouring it. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) first washed both hands thoroughly, then washed his face. After that, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to roll up the sleeves from his arms, but the Syrian cloak that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was wearing had tight sleeves, so they could not be rolled up. I started to go to inform him, but the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stopped me, and we performed the rak’ah that we caught, and completed what we had missed (after the salam). After finishing the prayer, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“You did well.”The previous hadith is also narrated through this second chain.

Thus, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took both hands out from underneath, and washed his face and hands, wiped over the portion of his head equal to the forehead, wiped over his turban, and wiped over his turban again. Then, when I reached out to remove his leather socks, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said,“Leave them; I put them on in a state of ablution.”Thus, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) wiped over them.

The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would say, "Should I not be a grateful servant?"
