Hadith of al-Nu‘man ibn Bashir from the Prophet (peace be upon him)
Hadith Number: 18399
Simak (may Allah have mercy on him) says: I heard Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) while he was wrapped in a cloak during a sermon, saying: I heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) delivering a sermon, and he was saying: I have warned you about Hell. If a person were at such and such a distance, even then he would have heard the voice of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).

It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to straighten the rows (in prayer) as if he were straightening arrows among our rows. Once, when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to say the takbeer, he saw that a man's chest was protruding. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Keep your rows straight (aligned), otherwise Allah will create discord among you."

It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The example of the one who strives in the path of Allah is like that person who fasts during the day and stands in prayer at night, "as long as he does not return, whenever he may return."

Hazrat Nu’man (may Allah be pleased with him) was once addressing from the pulpit of Homs, saying: We spent the first third of the night in prayer with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) on the 23rd night of Ramadan. Then, on the 25th night, we stood in prayer until half the night had passed. Then, on the 27th night, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) made us stand in prayer for so long that we feared the time for suhoor might pass. Therefore, we say that the seventh night of the last ten nights is the 27th night, and you people say that the 23rd is the seventh night. Now you tell me, who is correct, you or us?

It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: Whoever gives a gift to someone, such as silver or gold, or gives milk to someone, or gives a water-skin to someone, it is as if he has freed a slave.

It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him) that we had the honor of sitting in the company of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and we heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saying: The first tribulations of the Day of Judgment will appear like the parts of a dark night. In that era, a man will be a Muslim in the morning and a disbeliever in the evening, or a Muslim in the evening and a disbeliever in the morning, and people will sell their religion and morals for a small portion of worldly goods and possessions. Hasan says: By Allah! We are seeing such people; they have forms but no intellect, bodies but no wisdom. They are like moths of the fire and flies of greed and desire, who become happy with two dirhams in the morning and evening, and are ready to sell their religion for the price of a goat.

Habib bin Salim (may Allah have mercy on him) says that once a man was brought to Hazrat Nu’man (may Allah be pleased with him), whose wife had made it lawful for her husband to benefit from her slave-girl. He said,“I will give the same verdict regarding this as the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did. If his wife has permitted him to benefit from her slave-girl, I will give him one hundred lashes, and if she has not permitted, I will stone him to death.”(It became known that his wife had given permission, so he gave him one hundred lashes.)

It is narrated from Hazrat Nu’man (may Allah be pleased with him) that once we were sitting in the mosque. Basheer used to withhold his narrations. In our gathering, Abu Tha’labah Khushani (may Allah be pleased with him) came and said,“O Basheer Sa’d! Do you remember any hadith of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding the rulers?”Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“I remember the sermon of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).”Hazrat Abu Tha’labah (may Allah be pleased with him) sat down, and Hazrat Hudhaifah (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: ‘Prophethood will remain among you as long as Allah wills it to remain. Then Allah will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be a caliphate on the way of Prophethood, and it will remain as long as Allah wills it to remain. Then Allah will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be biting (oppressive) kingship, and it will remain as long as Allah wills it to remain. Then Allah will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be tyrannical rule, and it will remain as long as Allah wills it to remain. Then Allah will remove it when He wills to remove it. Then there will be a caliphate on the way of Prophethood.’ Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) fell silent.”
The narrator of the hadith, Habeeb, says: When Umar bin Abdul Aziz was appointed as caliph, Yazid bin Nu’man (may Allah be pleased with him) became his advisor. I wrote this hadith in a letter to Yazid bin Nu’man as a reminder, and at the end I wrote:“I hope that the rule of the Commander of the Faithful has come after the biting and tyrannical rule.”Yazid bin Nu’man presented my letter to the Commander of the Faithful, and after reading it, he became very pleased and happy.

It is narrated from Hazrat Nu'man (may Allah be pleased with him), probably as a marfu' hadith, that a man set out on a journey along a forest path. On the way, he took a nap under a tree, and with him was his mount on which his food and drink were placed. When the man woke up, he did not see his mount. He climbed a high hill to look, but did not see the mount. Then he climbed another hill, but still did not see the mount. Then he turned back and suddenly saw his mount, dragging its reins and coming towards him. How happy would he be! But his happiness is not greater than the happiness of Allah when a servant repents before Allah and Allah becomes pleased.
