Hadith of 'Amr ibn Salamah (may Allah be pleased with them)
Hadith Number: 20333
Hazrat Amr bin Salamah (may Allah be pleased with him) says that we used to live in a town. When people would return from the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), they would pass by us. I would go near them and listen to their conversations, to the extent that I memorized some parts of the Qur'an. People were waiting for the conquest of Makkah so that they could accept Islam. So, when Makkah was conquered, people started coming to the Prophet (peace be upon him). They would say, "O Messenger of Allah, I am the representative of such-and-such tribe and have brought the message of their acceptance of Islam." My father also went to the Prophet (peace be upon him) with the message of his tribe's acceptance of Islam, and when he was about to return, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Appoint as your imam the one who has memorized the most Qur'an." At that time, I lived in a neighborhood of many houses. When people considered, they found no one who had memorized more Qur'an than me, so despite my young age, they made me the imam. And I began to lead them in prayer. I used to have a sheet on my body, and when I would bow or prostrate, it would become short and my private parts would become exposed. Seeing this, an old woman said to the people, "Cover your imam's private parts." So the people made a shirt for me, and I was very happy to receive it.

Hazrat Amr bin Salamah says that some riders used to come to us from the Prophet (peace be upon him). We would learn the Qur'an from them. They narrated this hadith to us that the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The one among you who knows the most Qur'an should lead your prayer.

Abdul Majeed Aqili says that we set out for Hajj at the time when Yazid bin Muhallab had rebelled. We were informed that there was a well named Rajeeh in Aliah. When we completed the rites of Hajj, we reached Rajeeh and made our mounts sit down, then we ourselves went to the well. There, some elderly men with dyed beards were sitting and talking. We asked those people, "Is there a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him) living here? Where is his house?" They replied, "Yes, a companion lives here, and that is his house." We walked to his house and stood outside and greeted him. He allowed us to enter. When we entered the house, we saw a very old man lying down, who was called Adaa bin Khalid Kilabi. We asked him, "Did you have the companionship of the Prophet (peace be upon him)?" He replied, "Yes, if it were not night, I would have read to you the letter that the Prophet (peace be upon him) wrote to me." Then he asked us, "Who are you people?" We replied, "We are from the people of Basra." He welcomed us and asked, "What happened to Yazid bin Muhallab?" We said, "He is there inviting to the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of the Prophet (peace be upon him)." He asked, "How is Yazid bin Muhallab compared to the current ruler?" I said, "Whom should we follow, the people of Sham or Yazid bin Muhallab?" He repeated three times, "If you remain quietly seated, you will succeed." I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) on the day of Arafah standing on both stirrups of his camel. The Prophet (peace be upon him) was proclaiming loudly, "O people, what day is this?" The people said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, "What month is this?" The people said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace be upon him) asked, "What city is this?" The people said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said, "Today is a sacred day, and this month is sacred, and this city is sacred. Remember, your lives and your wealth are sacred to each other just as this day, this month, and this city are sacred, until you meet your Lord. He will ask you about your deeds." Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) raised his hands towards the sky several times and said, "O Allah, bear witness."

When I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mention tribes, I understood that this referred to the Arabs, because non-Arabs are attributed to their cities.

Hazrat Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: After me, there will come a people in my Ummah who will recite the Qur'an, but it will not go beyond their throats. They will go out of the religion just as an arrow passes through its prey, and they will never return to the religion. They will be the worst of creation. Ibn Samit says that then I met Hazrat Rafi' and narrated this hadith to him, and he said: I too heard this hadith from the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
