Ubaidullah bin Ziyad came to visit Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Yasar (may Allah be pleased with him) during the illness in which he passed away. Sayyiduna Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "I will tell you a hadith which I heard from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). He said: 'When Allah Almighty appoints a servant as a ruler over some subjects, and he does not protect them with goodwill, he will not even smell the fragrance of Paradise.'"

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) told us two hadiths. I have witnessed the fulfillment of one, and I am awaiting the other. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us that trust (amanah) descends into the depths of people’s hearts, then it is strengthened by the Qur’an and then by the hadith. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) told us about its removal: a man will sleep a sleep, and (in that sleep) trust will be taken away from his heart, and a faint mark of dishonesty will remain. Then he will sleep another sleep, and now its mark will become like a blister, as if you roll a spark on your foot and a blister appears on the surface, which looks swollen but inside there is nothing. Then the situation will become such that people will engage in buying and selling in the morning, and there will not be a trustworthy person among them. It will be said,“There is a trustworthy person in such-and-such tribe.”About a person it will be said,“How intelligent he is, how resolute he is, and how brave he is,”even though there will not be even a mustard seed’s worth of faith (trust) in his heart. (Sayyiduna Hudhayfah, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) I have also seen a time when I did not care from whom I bought or sold; if he was a Muslim, Islam would prevent him (from dishonesty), and if he was a Christian, his helper would prevent him. But now, I do not buy or sell except with so-and-so and so-and-so.

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that we were sitting in the company of Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him) when he asked,“Does anyone among you remember any hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding tribulation (fitnah)?”I said,“I remember it just as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) narrated it.”Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“You were very bold in asking the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about tribulations.”I said,“A man’s family, wealth, children, and neighbors are all sources of tribulation for him, and prayer, fasting, charity, enjoining good, and forbidding evil are expiations for these tribulations.”Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“I am not asking you about this. Tell me about the tribulation which will surge like the waves of the sea.”At this I said,“O Commander of the Faithful, do not fear it, for there is a closed door between you and that tribulation.”He asked,“Will that door be broken or simply opened?”I said,“It will be broken.”Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) exclaimed,“Then it will never be closed again.”(Shaqiq, the narrator of the hadith, said) We asked Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him),“Did Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) have knowledge about what the door was?”He replied,“Yes, just as one knows that night comes after day. I have narrated to you a hadith that is absolutely true.”(The narrator says) We were afraid to ask Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) about what was meant by the door, so we said to Hazrat Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) to ask. When he inquired, Hudhayfah replied,“The door was none other than Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) himself.”

Sayyiduna Hudhayfah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Bring me the names of those people who have recited the Kalimah of Islam." So we wrote down the names of one and a half thousand men and presented them to him. And we said to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "Our number has reached one and a half thousand, so what do we have to fear now?" But you see that (after the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him) we became so entangled in tribulations that now even a Muslim fears while praying alone.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) gave some people a gift, and Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) was present there. (He says:) The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) did not give anything to one of them, even though he was the most beloved to me among them. I said,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you did not give anything to so-and-so, even though I consider him to be a believer.”He said,“A believer or a Muslim?”I remained silent for a while, then my thoughts compelled me to speak again about him, and I said,“O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), you did not give anything to so-and-so, and by Allah, according to what I have observed, he is a believer.”He said,“A believer or a Muslim?”I remained silent for a while, then once again, due to my knowledge, I began to repeat my earlier statement. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also repeated his answer. Then he said,“O Sa’d, even though a person is more beloved to me (still, by overlooking him) I give this wealth to someone else out of fear that (due to his weakness) he may turn away from Islam, and Allah may throw him on his face into the Fire.”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We are more deserving of doubt than Ibrahim (peace be upon him), when he said: "My Lord, show me how You give life to the dead." Allah said: "Do you not believe?" He said: "Yes, but only that my heart may be satisfied." And Allah have mercy on Lut (peace be upon him), for he used to seek refuge with a mighty support (i.e., the Generous Lord). And if I had stayed in prison as long as Yusuf (peace be upon him) did, I would have surely responded to the caller.

Narrated Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Every prophet was given such and such miracles that (upon seeing them) people believed in them, (but) their effect did not remain (in later times). And the miracle that was given to me is the revelation (the Qur'an) which Allah has sent down to me. (Its effect will remain until the Day of Resurrection.) Therefore, I hope that on the Day of Resurrection, my followers will be more than the followers of other prophets.
