Narrated by Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both): The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "If any of your wives asks permission to go to the mosque (to perform prayer), do not prevent her, rather grant her permission."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) said that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) had a wife who used to come to the mosque to offer the Fajr and Isha prayers in congregation. She was told, "Despite knowing that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) dislikes this and feels a sense of jealousy, why do you still go to the mosque?" She replied, "Then why does he not forbid me?" The people said, "Because of the saying of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): Do not prevent Allah’s female servants from coming to Allah’s mosques."

Chapter: Moderation in Recitation in Audible Prayers if Loudness May Cause Harm
Hadith Number: 256
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) explained regarding the blessed verse:“And do not raise your voice in your prayer nor lower it too much”(Bani Isra’il: 110) that this was revealed when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to worship secretly in Makkah. When he would recite aloud in prayer, the polytheists would hear and would abuse the Noble Qur’an, its Revealer (Allah), its bringer (Jibril), and (also) the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Therefore, Allah Almighty said: Do not raise your voice in your prayer, nor make it completely silent, meaning do not raise your voice so much that the polytheists hear, nor make it so low that even your companions cannot hear. Rather, choose a way between the two, meaning recite in such a voice that your companions can hear and learn the Qur’an, but do not recite louder than that.

Chapter: Listening to the Recitation
Hadith Number: 257
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) explained regarding Allah Almighty’s statement:“Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it”(Al-Qiyamah: 16), that when Jibreel (peace be upon him) would descend with revelation upon the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would move his tongue and lips, and this was very hard upon him, which was also apparent from his face. Therefore, Allah Almighty revealed the verse which is in the Surah:“Do not move your tongue with it to hasten it.”It is upon Us to collect it and to recite it, meaning it is Our responsibility to gather the Qur’an in your heart and to make you recite it. Then when We have recited it, follow its recitation, meaning when We reveal the revelation, listen attentively. Then its explanation is also upon Us, meaning it is also Our responsibility to make you explain it to the people with your tongue. It was narrated that after this, whenever Jibreel (peace be upon him) would bring revelation, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would remain silent, and when he departed, he would recite it just as Allah Almighty had promised him.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), in the explanation of the Divine Words "Do not move your tongue..." says that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to feel great difficulty at the time of the revelation of the Qur'an, and among its (signs) was that, in order to memorize it, he would move his lips. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas said, "I move my lips just as he used to move them." Sa'id (Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Jubair, who narrates this hadith from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both) says, "I also move my lips just as I saw Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) move them." Then he moved his lips. (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said:) Then these verses were revealed: "O Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), do not move your tongue to hasten to memorize the Qur'an. Its collection and recitation is Our responsibility." (Al-Qiyamah 75:16-17) Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says, "That is, to make the Qur'an firm in your heart and to recite it is Our responsibility." Then, when We have recited it, follow its recitation. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas says (this means) that you should keep listening to it silently. After that, making you understand its meaning is Our responsibility. Then, surely, it is Our responsibility that you recite it (i.e., that you are able to preserve it). Thus, after this, when Jibreel (peace be upon him) would come to you (with revelation), you would listen attentively. When he would leave, the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite that (revelation) just as Jibreel (peace be upon him) had recited it.

Chapter: Reciting Aloud in Fajr and Reciting to the Jinn
Hadith Number: 259
Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrated that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) once went with some companions towards the market of ‘Ukaz. In those days, the devils had been prevented from obtaining news from the heavens, and flaming fire (shooting stars) began to be thrown at them. So those devils returned to their people and asked,“What has happened?”They said,“We have been prevented from obtaining news from the heavens, and (when we go towards the heavens) flaming fire is thrown at us.”The devils said,“There must be some new reason for us being prevented from obtaining news from the heavens, so spread out in the east and west in all directions and find out the cause that has prevented us from obtaining news from the heavens.”The devils who set out to find the reason went towards Tihamah, where the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), while going to the market of ‘Ukaz, was offering the Fajr prayer with his companions at the place of Nakhlah. When they heard the Qur’an, they listened to it attentively. Then they said,“By Allah, this is what has prevented us from obtaining news from the heavens.”Then they returned to their people and said,“O people of our community, we have heard a wondrous Qur’an which guides to the straight path, so we have believed in it and we will never associate anyone with our Lord.”() Upon this, this verse (Surah al-Jinn) was revealed to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him): (Say: It has been revealed to me...) and the conversation of the jinn was revealed to you.

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite Surah Al-Fatihah and another surah in the first two rak‘ahs of Zuhr prayer, and he would recite at length in them. But the last two rak‘ahs he would make light, and sometimes he would let us hear a verse. In ‘Asr prayer, he would recite Surah Al-Fatihah and other surahs, and he would also make the first two rak‘ahs long. Similarly, in the Fajr prayer, he would make the first rak‘ah long and the second light.

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the people of Kufa complained about Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) to Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him). Therefore, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) removed him and appointed Sayyiduna Ammar (may Allah be pleased with him) as the governor of Kufa. The people of Kufa even said about Sa’d that he could not even lead the prayer properly. Consequently, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) summoned him and asked,“O Abu Ishaq, the people of Kufa think that you cannot lead the prayer properly.”He replied,“By Allah, I used to lead them in prayer just as the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did, and I did not fall short in any way. When I led the ‘Isha prayer, I would lengthen the recitation in its first two rak’ahs and lighten the last two.”Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“O Abu Ishaq, this is what I expected of you.”Then he sent one or more men with Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) to Kufa. The envoy went to every mosque and inquired about him; everyone praised him. But when they reached the mosque of Banu Abs, a man named Usamah bin Qatadah, whose kunyah was Abu Sa’d, stood up and said,“Since you have asked by Allah, (listen that) Sa’d neither himself participated in jihad with the army, nor did he distribute the spoils of war properly, nor did he judge with justice.”Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him), upon hearing this, said,“By Allah, I make three supplications regarding you: O Allah, if this servant of Yours is lying and has stood up only for show and ostentation, then prolong his life, increase his poverty, and subject him to trials.”After that, (the man became so miserable that) when he was asked, he would say,“I am an old and troubled man; I have been afflicted by Sa’d’s curse.”Abdul Malik (one of the narrators of the hadith) said,“I saw him; his eyebrows had drooped over his eyes due to old age, but even then he would tease girls in the streets.”

Sayyiduna Abu Barzah (Fadalah bin Ubaid, may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to offer the morning prayer at a time when we could recognize the person sitting next to us. In the morning prayer, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) would recite sixty to one hundred verses, and he would offer the Zuhr prayer when the sun had declined, and the Asr prayer at such a time that after offering the prayer, we would reach the farthest boundary of Madinah Munawwarah, but the sun would still be bright. And he did not consider it objectionable to delay the Isha prayer until one-third of the night had passed.
