Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the poor people came to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: "The wealthy and affluent people have attained high ranks and everlasting Paradise, even though they pray as we pray and fast as we fast, but because of their wealth, they have superiority over us in that they perform Hajj, ‘Umrah, Jihad, and give charity (and due to our poverty, we are unable to do these deeds)." Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of an act which, if you adhere to it, you will catch up with those who have surpassed you, and no one after you will reach your rank, and you will be the best among them, except those who do the same as you? After every prayer, say thirty-three times Subhan Allah (Glory be to Allah), thirty-three times Alhamdulillah (All praise is due to Allah), and thirty-three times Allahu Akbar (Allah is the Greatest)." (Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, says:) "Then there was a difference among us; some said we should say thirty-three times Subhan Allah, thirty-three times Alhamdulillah, and thirty-four times Allahu Akbar. I then asked the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) again about this, and he said: 'Say Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar until each of them is said thirty-three times.'"

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would remain silent for a short while between the opening takbeer and the recitation. So I asked, "O Messenger of Allah, may my parents be sacrificed for you, what do you recite during this silence between the takbeer and the recitation?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied, "I say: O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, purify me of sins as a white garment is cleansed of dirt. O Allah, wash away my sins with water, snow, and hail."

Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that we were with the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer. He heard the sound of some people walking and talking. After the prayer, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) inquired, "What is the matter?" The people said, "We were hurrying for the prayer." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Do not do so. Rather, when you come for prayer, maintain dignity and calmness. Whatever part of the prayer you catch, perform it, and whatever you miss, complete it (afterwards)."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the call for prayer was given and the rows were straightened. The people were standing when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards us from his chamber. When he stood on the prayer mat, he remembered that he was in a state of impurity (junub). So he said to us, "Remain standing in your places," and he went back. Then he performed ghusl (ritual bath) and returned to us, with drops of water dripping from his head. He pronounced the takbir for prayer and we performed the prayer with him.

Ibn Shihab narrates that one day ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz (may Allah have mercy on him) delayed the (‘Asr) prayer. So, ‘Urwah bin Zubair went to him and informed him that (similarly) Mughirah bin Shu‘bah had once delayed the prayer (in Iraq) when he was (the governor) there. Then Abu Mas‘ud Ansari went to him and said,“Mughirah, what is this matter? Do you not know that when Jibril came, he offered the prayer and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) also offered the prayer. Then Jibril offered the prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also offered the prayer. Then Jibril (‘alayhis salam) offered the prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also offered the prayer. Then Jibril offered the prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also offered the prayer. Then Jibril offered the prayer, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also offered the prayer. Then Jibril said, ‘I have been commanded in this way.’ Upon this, ‘Umar bin ‘Abdul ‘Aziz said to ‘Urwah, ‘Do you know what you are narrating? Did Jibril show the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) the times of prayer (by action)?’ ‘Urwah said, ‘Yes, in this way Bishr bin Abi Mas‘ud used to narrate from his father.’
