Narrated by Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is not permitted for any human being to prostrate to another human being. If it were appropriate for a human to prostrate to another human, I would have commanded a woman to prostrate to her husband, because of the great right he has over her. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! If the husband were to have a sore from his feet to the parting of his hair, and pus and blood were to flow from it, and his wife were to come and lick it, even then she would not have fulfilled his right.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abi Awfa (may Allah be pleased with him) that Sayyiduna Mu'adh (may Allah be pleased with him) went to Yemen or Syria and saw that the Christians prostrate to their leaders and priests. He thought in his heart that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is more deserving of such respect. Then when he returned, he said: O Messenger of Allah! I saw the Christians prostrating to their priests and leaders, and it occurred to me in my heart that you are more deserving of this respect. But the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: If I were to command anyone to prostrate to anyone other than Allah Almighty, I would have commanded a woman to prostrate to her husband. A wife cannot fulfill the rights of Allah Almighty until she fulfills the rights of her husband as they ought to be fulfilled. If the husband calls his wife for marital relations and she is sitting on a saddle (of a riding animal), she must respond to her husband's request.

It is narrated from ‘Aidh bin ‘Abdullah that Sayyiduna Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Yemen. He met a woman from the Khaulān tribe, and with her were her twelve sons. She had left their father at home. The youngest of her sons was fully bearded. She stood up, and two of her sons were supporting her. She greeted Sayyiduna Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him) and said:“O man! Who sent you here?”Sayyiduna Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sent me here.”She said:“Did the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) really send you? Well, if you are the messenger of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), why don’t you tell me something?”Sayyiduna Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“Ask whatever you need.”She said:“Tell me, what is a man’s right over his wife?”He told her:“Fear Allah as much as you are able, listen and obey.”She said:“I ask you by Allah, tell me, what is a man’s right over his wife?”He said:“Are you not satisfied that you listen to your husband, obey him, and fear Allah?”She said:“Yes, I am certainly satisfied, but still, tell me, what is a man’s right over his wife? Because I have left their father at home, and he has become very old.”Sayyiduna Mu‘adh (may Allah be pleased with him) said:“By Him in Whose Hands is the soul of Mu‘adh! Suppose when you return to him, you find him in such a state that leprosy has eaten away his flesh, and both his nostrils have burst, and pus and blood are flowing from his nostrils, and you put both his nostrils in your mouth so that you may fulfill his right, even then you would not have fulfilled his right.”

He (peace and blessings be upon him) greeted us with salam and then said: Refrain from being ungrateful like the prosperous people. We asked: O Messenger of Allah! What is the ingratitude of the prosperous people? He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It may be that you spend a long time with your parents living unmarried, then Allah Almighty grants you a husband and, through him, blesses you with children, but one day in anger you say (to your husband): I have never seen any good or benefit from you.
