Chapter: What has been reported regarding various matters related to Isra and Mi'raj
Hadith Number: 10584
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Sidrat al-Muntaha was raised for me in the seventh heaven; its fruit was like the jars of Hajar and its leaves were like the ears of elephants. From its trunk, two apparent rivers and two hidden rivers were flowing. I said: O Jibril! What are these two things? He said: The two hidden rivers are going into Paradise, and these two apparent rivers are the Nile and the Euphrates.

It is also narrated from Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When I reached the Sidrah (Lote Tree), I saw that its fruit was like large jars and its leaves were like the ears of elephants. When the command of Allah Almighty covered it, it turned into rubies, emeralds, or pearls of that kind.

‘Aamir narrates that Masruq came to Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) and said: O Mother of the Believers! Did Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) see his Lord? She said: Glory be to Allah! What a strange thing, your words have made my hair stand on end. Do you not know about these three things, that whoever tells you about them, he is a liar: (1) Whoever tells you that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) saw his Lord, then he has lied. Then Sayyidah recited these verses: No vision can grasp Him, but He grasps all vision. (Surah Al-An’am: 103) And Allah Almighty said: It is not possible for any human that Allah should speak to him except by revelation, or from behind a veil, or by sending a messenger to reveal, by His permission, what He wills. Indeed, He is Most High, Most Wise. (Surah Az-Zukhruf: 51) (2) Whoever tells you about tomorrow, he is also a liar. Then Sayyidah recited this verse: Verily, with Allah is the knowledge of the Hour, He sends down the rain, and knows what is in the wombs. And (3) whoever tells you that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) concealed any part of the Shari’ah, he is also a liar. Then she recited this verse: O Messenger! Convey what has been revealed to you from your Lord. In fact, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) saw Jibreel in his original form twice.

(Second chain) Masruq says: I was sitting reclining with Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her), and she said: O Abu Aisha! I am the first person who asked the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) about this matter. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That was Jibreel; I have only seen him in his true form twice. When I saw him descending from the sky, his great form filled the space between the sky and the earth.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) asked Jibreel (peace be upon him) if he wished to see him in his original form. He replied: Pray to your Lord. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) prayed to his Lord. Then, from the east, a black figure arose, and it began to rise and expand. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) saw it, he fainted. Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to him, made him stand, and wiped the saliva from the corner of his mouth.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash’ari (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Verily, Allah does not sleep, nor does it befit Him to sleep. He lowers the scale for some and raises it for others. His veil is fire. If He were to remove that veil, the radiance and splendor of His Face would burn everything that His gaze reaches. Then Abu Ubaidah, the narrator, recited this verse: When Musa reached there, he was called: Blessed is whoever is in the fire and whoever is around it, and glorified is Allah, the Lord of all the worlds. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When I was taken on the Night Journey (Isra) and I reached Makkah in the morning, I became anxious and realized that people would belie me, so you sat in seclusion, saddened. The enemy of Allah, Abu Jahl, passed by you, he came and sat near you and, mocking, said: Has something happened? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. He said: What has happened? You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was taken on a Night Journey last night. He said: Up to where? You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Up to Bayt al-Maqdis (Jerusalem). He said: Then in the morning you also reached us? You said: Yes. Abu Jahl thought that he would not belie him immediately, lest he call his people and (Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him) refuse to narrate his statement. Therefore, Abu Jahl said: If I call your people, will you narrate this conversation before them? The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. He said: O assembly of Banu Ka'b bin Lu'ayy, come here. All the gatherings rushed towards him, they all came and sat with the two of them. Abu Jahl said: (O Muhammad!) The thing you narrated to me, narrate it to them as well. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I was taken on a Night Journey last night. They said: Up to where? You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Up to Bayt al-Maqdis. They said: Then in the morning you also reached here? You (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Yes. (Upon hearing this) some started clapping and some, astonished at what they considered a lie, sat holding their heads. Then they said: Can you describe the signs of Masjid al-Aqsa? Some of them had traveled to that area and had seen Masjid al-Aqsa. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: I began to describe its signs, but regarding some signs, I began to feel some confusion and uncertainty. You said: The (image of) Masjid al-Aqsa was brought and placed near the house of Iqal or Aqil, I saw it and described its signs, yet I could not remember some signs. The people said: As for the matter of the signs, by Allah, you have described them correctly.
