Abu Malik, may Allah have mercy on him, said regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement: ﴿And Allah would not punish them while you are among them, and Allah would not punish them while they seek forgiveness﴾ that this verse is about the Muslims. And regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement: ﴿But why should Allah not punish them﴾ he said that this verse is about the polytheists.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement:“And know that whatever you obtain as spoils of war, then indeed, for Allah is one fifth of it and for the Messenger...”he said that the khums (one fifth) is divided into five parts. Thus, the share of Allah the Exalted and His Messenger (peace be upon him) is one part, and the rest is distributed among the other entitled recipients.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Seek the Night of Qadr on the seventeenth night of Ramadan, which was the day of Badr, that is, the morning of ﴿يَوْمَ الْفُرْقَانِ يَوْمَ الْتَقَى الْجَمْعَانِ﴾, and on the twenty-first night, and on the twenty-third night, because the Night of Qadr only occurs on odd nights.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said to me: Do you know what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, means by His statement: ﴿يَضْرِبُونَ وُجُوهَهُمْ وَأَدْبَارَهُمْ﴾? I said: No. So he said: What is meant by it is their faces and their backs, that is, their private parts. But Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, is Most Gracious, so He expressed it in an indirect manner.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: Allah the Exalted said:“O Prophet! Urge the believers to fight. If there are twenty steadfast among you, they will overcome two hundred”(__QUR_N__). In this, it was decreed that twenty Muslims should not turn their backs to two hundred. Then Allah the Exalted granted relief and said:“Now Allah has lightened [the burden] for you and He knows that there is weakness among you”(__QUR_N__). Now, it is not appropriate for one hundred Muslims to flee from two hundred.
