الْآيَتَانِ (189 وَ 190) قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {هُوَ الَّذِي خَلَقَكُمْ مِنْ نَفْسٍ وَاحِدَةٍ وَجَعَلَ مِنْهَا زَوْجَهَا لِيَسْكُنَ إِلَيْهَا فَلَمَّا تَغَشَّاهَا حَمَلَتْ حَمْلا خَفِيفًا فَمَرَّتْ بِهِ فَلَمَّا أَثْقَلَتْ دَعَوَا اللهَ رَبَّهُمَا لَئِنْ آتَيْتَنَا صَالِحًا لَنَكُونَنَّ مِنَ الشَّاكِرِينَ * فَلَمَّا آتَاهُمَا صَالِحًا جَعَلا لَهُ شُرَكَاءَ فِيمَا آتَاهُمَا فَتَعَالَى اللهُ عَمَّا يُشْرِكُونَ}
Verses (189 and 190) His saying, Exalted is He: {It is He who created you from one soul and created from it its mate that he might dwell in security with her. And when he covers her, she carries a light burden and continues therein. And when it becomes heavy, they both invoke Allah, their Lord, "If You should give us a good [child], we will surely be among the grateful." * But when He gives them a good [child], they ascribe partners to Him concerning that which He has given them. Exalted is Allah above what they associate with Him}

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) regarding this verse: ﴿So when she became heavy, they both called upon Allah, their Lord, "If You give us a righteous [child] , we will surely be among the grateful." * But when He gave them a righteous [child] , they made partners for Him in what He had given them.﴾ When Lady Hawwa (peace be upon her) became pregnant, Iblis came to her and said: "I am the one who expelled both of you from Paradise. If you do not obey me, I will make your child have two horns so that he will rip open your belly or be born dead." Consequently, the child was born dead. Then she became pregnant again, and Iblis said the same thing again. Lady Hawwa (peace be upon her) asked: "In what should I obey you?" He said: "Name the child 'Abd al-Harith.'" So they did so, and the child was born healthy and safe. This is the statement of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic: ﴿They made partners for Him in what He had given them.﴾ And 'Ikrimah (may Allah have mercy on him) said that this ruling is not specific only to Sayyiduna Adam (peace be upon him), but is general for all people after him.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Zubair (may Allah be pleased with them both) said from the pulpit: The meaning of Allah Almighty’s statement,“Take what is given freely, enjoin what is good, and turn away from the ignorant”is that we should adopt gentleness and ease from among the habits of people, and by Allah! As long as I am with them, I will continue to adopt this approach.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said regarding Allah the Exalted’s statement: ﴿And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and be silent﴾: This command is about listening to the sermon on the day of Jumu'ah.

Muhammad bin Ka'b (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would recite the Qur'an, the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) would begin to recite along with him, until this verse was revealed in Surah Al-A'raf: "And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and be silent."

Muawiyah bin Qurrah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: ﴿And when the Qur'an is recited, listen to it and be silent﴾ regarding prayer, because people used to talk during prayer, but the storytellers applied it to storytelling.

Muawiyah bin Qurrah, may Allah have mercy on him, said: I asked Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, whether he preferred reciting the Qur'an from the Mushaf or sitting with a storyteller. He replied: Recite the Qur'an from your Mushaf. I asked: Is visiting a sick person more preferable or sitting with a storyteller? He replied: Visit the sick person. I said: Is it better to go with a funeral procession or to sit with a storyteller? He replied: Go with the funeral procession. I said: If a man asks me for help in some need, is it better to go with him or to sit with a storyteller? He replied: Go with your brother in his need, until Hasan, may Allah have mercy on him, considered helping a brother in his need to be the best gathering in one's free time.
