It is narrated from Sa'id bin al-Musayyib (may Allah have mercy on him) that Sayyiduna Rafi' bin Khadij (may Allah be pleased with him) married the daughter of Muhammad bin Maslamah. Then he wanted to divorce her, so the woman said: "Do not divorce me, keep me in your marriage and fix for me whatever maintenance you wish." So Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: __QUR_N__ "And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion, there is no sin upon them if they make terms of settlement between them." __QUR_N__ Thus, it became the Sunnah that if a woman is in a man's marriage and she becomes old and the husband dislikes her and wants to divorce her, then if the woman makes reconciliation, the man can keep her and fix for her whatever he wishes.

Hisham bin Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates from his father Urwah (may Allah have mercy on him) that this verse:“And if a woman fears from her husband contempt or evasion...”(__QUR_N__) was revealed concerning Lady Sawdah bint Zam’ah (may Allah be pleased with her) and women like her, because Lady Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) had become elderly and she feared that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) might separate from her, and she wished to retain her position. She had also realized the love of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for Lady Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her) and her status. So Lady Sawdah (may Allah be pleased with her) gifted her day with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) to Lady Aishah (may Allah be pleased with her), and the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) accepted this.

It was asked from Ubaidah Salmani (may Allah have mercy on him) about the blessed verse: ﴿And you will never be able to be equal [in feeling] between wives, even if you should strive [to do so] ﴾, so he pointed towards his chest and said: In the matter of love and intercourse.

قَوْلُهُ تَعَالَى: {وَقَدْ نَـزَّلَ عَلَيْكُمْ فِي الْكِتَابِ أَنْ إِذَا سَمِعْتُمْ آيَاتِ اللهِ يُكْفَرُ بِهَا وَيُسْتَهْزَأُ بِهَا فَلا تَقْعُدُوا مَعَهُمْ حَتَّى يَخُوضُوا فِي حَدِيثٍ غَيْرِهِ إِنَّكُمْ إِذًا مِثْلُهُمْ}

Ibrahim al-Nakha'i, may Allah have mercy on him, said: A man says a word in a gathering by which Allah becomes pleased, so Allah's mercy descends upon him and surrounds those around him as well. And sometimes a man says a word in a gathering by which Allah becomes angry, so Allah's wrath descends upon him and that wrath also surrounds those around him.

Abu Wa'il (may Allah have mercy on him) said: When a person says something that pleases Allah, mercy descends upon him and those around him; and if someone says something that angers Allah, then His wrath comes upon him and also upon those present in the gathering. Then he recited the verse: "And He has already revealed to you in the Book that when you hear the verses of Allah [being denied and ridiculed] , do not sit with them until they engage in another conversation. Indeed, you would then be like them." [Qur'an 4:140]

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Bilal bin Harith (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: A man speaks a word that pleases Allah, and he does not even think that it will reach so far, but Allah, because of that word, writes His pleasure for him until the Day of Resurrection. And a man speaks a word that angers Allah, and he does not even think that it will reach so far, but Allah, because of that word, writes His displeasure for him until the Day of Resurrection.

Mujahid (may Allah have mercy on him) said: The meaning of ﴿لَا يُحِبُّ اللَّهُ الْجَهْرَ بِالسُّوءِ﴾ is: If someone hosts you as a guest and then does not show hospitality, then you are permitted to complain about him.

Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: In the recitation of Ubayy bin Ka'b, the blessed verse ﴿وَإِنْ مِنْ أَهْلِ الْكِتَابِ إِلَّا لَيُؤْمِنَنَّ بِهِ قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِ﴾ «قَبْلَ مَوْتِهِمْ» is present, meaning no Jew ever dies until he believes in 'Isa (peace be upon him). It was asked: If he falls from a roof? He replied: While falling, he says it with his tongue. It was said: If someone's neck is struck? He replied: That same statement is upon his lips.
