Sunan Saeed bin Mansur
His (Allah's) saying: {O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful to you and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like transgressors}
Hadith Number: 771
Abu Malik (may Allah have mercy on him) says:“O you who believe! Do not forbid the good things which Allah has made lawful for you”(__QUR_N__)—this verse was revealed about Sayyiduna Uthman bin Maz’oon (may Allah be pleased with him) and some of his companions. They had made many lawful things and women unlawful for themselves, to the extent that some of them intended to cut off their private parts. So Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse:“O you who believe! Do not forbid the good things which Allah has made lawful for you, and do not transgress. Indeed, Allah does not like the transgressors.”(__QUR_N__) That is, do not make lawful things unlawful, and do not transgress, for indeed Allah does not like those who transgress.

Masruq (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Meat was brought to Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), so he began to eat from it and said to the people: Come near. The people came near, but one of them held back. Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) asked him: What happened to you? He said: I have made milk unlawful for myself. He said: This is from the footsteps of Satan. Come near and eat, and offer expiation for your oath. Then he recited this verse:“O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you”up to“the transgressors.”__QUR_N__ __XREF_N__ __REF_N__

Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Muqrin (may Allah be pleased with him) came to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: "I have made relations with my wife forbidden upon myself." So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verse: "O you who believe! Do not make unlawful the good things which Allah has made lawful for you" up to "the transgressors", and said: "Free a slave." Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I recited this verse last night, and that is why I have come to you today." Then he said: "My slave has stolen my sheet." Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "Your wealth has been stolen by one of your own people." Then, it seems, Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "My slave-girl committed adultery." He said: "Flog her." He said: "She is unmarried." He replied: "Her Islam is her protection (i.e., chastity)."

Sayyiduna Ma'qil bin Muqrin (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him): I have sworn an oath that I will not sleep on my bed for a year. So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the verse: ﴿O you who have believed, do not prohibit the good things which Allah has made lawful for you﴾, then said: Pay the expiation for your oath. Ma'qil (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: Which thing is best for expiation? He said: Freeing a slave. He said: My slave stole my sheet and ran away with it, should I cut off his hand? He said: No, your wealth was only in the hands of some of your own people. Then he asked: My slave-girl committed adultery, should I flog her? He said: Yes, flog her fifty lashes. He asked: If she does it again? He said: Even then, flog her fifty lashes.

Ibrahim (may Allah have mercy on him) said in the explanation of Allah the Exalted’s statement: ﴿لَا يُؤَاخِذُكُمُ اللَّهُ بِاللَّغْوِ فِي أَيْمَانِكُمْ﴾: This is about the person who swears an oath about something and thinks that the matter is as he swore, but later the reality turns out to be otherwise, so expiation becomes obligatory upon such a person.

Saeed bin Jubair (may Allah have mercy on him) said: A vain oath is when a person swears an oath to commit a sin. If he abandons the sin, Allah does not hold him accountable for it, but if he commits the sin, he will be held accountable for it. I asked Abu Bishr (may Allah have mercy on him): Then what should he do? He said: He should offer expiation for his oath and abandon the sin.

Aamir al-Sha’bi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Idle oaths are the words of people such as «لَا وَاللَّهِ» and «بَلَىٰ وَاللَّهِ» , in which there is no conviction of an oath in the heart.

Ubaid bin Umair (may Allah have mercy on him) asked Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about a frivolous oath, so she replied: It is the same oath that Amir al-Sha'bi (may Allah have mercy on him) described, that is, to say «لَا وَاللَّهِ» or «بَلَىٰ وَاللَّهِ» unintentionally.
