Sunan Saeed bin Mansur
His (Allah's) saying: {But its expiation is the feeding of ten needy people from the average of that which you feed your [own] families or clothing them or the freeing of a slave. But whoever cannot find [or afford it]—then a fast of three days [is required]. That is the expiation for oaths when you have sworn. But guard your oaths}

A man from the west came to Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: By Allah, O Commander of the Faithful! You must give me a ride. So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) looked at him and said: By Allah! If you had mentioned your need without making me swear, it would have been better. And now, I swear by Allah that I will not give you a ride. The narrator says: I think he replied to him in this way thirty times or nearly thirty times.
Then an Ansari man whose name was Atiq bin Bilal said to him: What do you want? Have you not seen how many oaths the Commander of the Faithful has taken that he will not give you a ride? By Allah! You only want to cause trouble.
The man said: By Allah! This wealth belongs to Allah, by Allah! I am also one of Allah’s servants, by Allah! You are the Commander of the Faithful, my ride has left me stranded, by Allah! I am a traveler, I have been cut off on the way, by Allah! You must give me a ride.
Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: What did you say? He repeated the same thing, so he said: By Allah! This wealth is indeed Allah’s, and you are indeed Allah’s servant, and I am the Commander of the Faithful, and if your ride has left you stranded, I cannot leave you to perish, by Allah! I will give you a ride.
Then that man kept repeating his statement until Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) also swore an oath or swore twice, then said: From now on, I will not persist in any oath for which there is a better alternative, rather I will choose the better alternative.

His (Allah's) saying: {O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah], and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it that you may be successful. Satan only wants to cause between you animosity and hatred through intoxicants and gambling and to avert you from the remembrance of Allah and from prayer. So will you not desist

Hasan al-Basri (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Some of the companions of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) used to drink alcohol, and their normal lives continued upon this. When the prohibition of alcohol was revealed, some people said: Alcohol has become forbidden for us, but so-and-so, so-and-so, and so-and-so used to drink alcohol and all of them are people of Paradise, even though they died while drinking alcohol. This was at a time when alcohol had not yet been made forbidden. Then Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, revealed this verse: "O you who have believed, indeed, intoxicants, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah] , and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it." Then He said: "So will you not desist?" So the companions said: O our Lord! We have desisted. Then Allah revealed this verse: "There is not upon those who believe and do righteous deeds [any] blame concerning what they have consumed," meaning there is no sin upon those who, after believing and doing righteous deeds, drank alcohol before its prohibition, then they became pious, believed, did righteous deeds, then again adopted piety, remained firm upon faith, acted with excellence, and Allah loves those who do good.

Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Allah the Exalted mentioned wine and gambling in the verse:“They ask you about wine and gambling. Say, ‘In them is great sin and [yet, some] benefit for people. But their sin is greater than their benefit.’”In this verse, He spoke ill of wine and gambling, but did not make them unlawful at that time; at that time, both were lawful. Then after that, Allah the Exalted revealed another verse, which was stricter than the first:“O you who have believed, do not approach prayer while you are intoxicated,”meaning, do not go near prayer in a state of intoxication. Through this verse, it was made unlawful to pray while intoxicated. Then this verse from Surah al-Ma’idah was revealed:“Indeed, wine, gambling, [sacrificing on] stone altars [to other than Allah] , and divining arrows are but defilement from the work of Satan, so avoid it,”up to,“So will you not desist?”Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Through this verse, the prohibition of wine was completed—whether a little or a lot, whether it intoxicates or not, all was declared unlawful.
