Aamir Sha'bi narrates the statement of the preacher of Madinah Munawwarah, Ibn Abu Sa'ib: Sayyidah Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said: You should deliver a sermon once a week; if this is not accepted, then do it twice, and if this too is not accepted, then do it three times. I should not find you in such a state that you come to the people while they are engaged in their own conversation, and then you interrupt their talk. It should be such that the people listen to you attentively, then you converse with them, and when supplicating, avoid using rhymed and artificial words, because I have seen the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) and his companions disliked this.

So the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, raised both his hands, and that man said: Surely, we belong to Allah, and surely to Him we shall return. By the Lord of the Ka'bah! Daws has been destroyed. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, raised both his hands and supplicated: "O Allah! Grant guidance to the tribe of Daws."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came, and we also accompanied him. When we reached the graveyard, he instructed us, so we sat down. Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) walked among the graves, and went to one of the graves. He sat beside it and engaged in a lengthy supplication there. When the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned, he was weeping. Because of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) weeping, we also began to weep. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards us, and Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was in front of him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Why are you weeping? You have made us weep as well and have brought us to a state of lamentation. So the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took the hand of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), then turned towards us and asked: Did you become distressed because of my weeping? We replied: Yes. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: The grave which you saw, where I was supplicating, was the grave of (my mother) Amina bint Wahb. I asked my Lord for permission to seek forgiveness for her, but I was not granted permission. This verse was revealed to me:“It is not appropriate for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the polytheists.”So the same feeling overcame me as a child has for his mother. This made me weep. Beware! I had forbidden you from visiting graves, but now you should visit them, for they make one disinterested in the world and inclined towards the Hereafter.

Saeed bin Musayyib narrates from his father: When the time of Abu Talib’s death approached, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came. At that time, Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah were also present with Abu Talib. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: O uncle! Say“La ilaha illallah”(There is no god but Allah), so that I may testify for you before Allah because of this statement. Abu Jahl and Abdullah bin Abi Umayyah said: O Abu Talib! Are you turning away from the religion of Abdul Muttalib? The narrator states: The Prophet (peace be upon him) continued to present this offer to them and kept repeating this statement, until the last thing Abu Talib said to them was that he was on the religion of Abdul Muttalib. He refused to say“La ilaha illallah.”So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“I will continue to seek forgiveness for you until I am forbidden to do so.”Then this verse was revealed:“It is not appropriate for the Prophet and the believers to seek forgiveness for the polytheists, even if they are close relatives, after it has become clear to them that they are the people of Hell.”(The narrator states) This verse was revealed regarding Abu Talib:“Indeed, you do not guide whom you love, but Allah guides whom He wills. And He knows best those who are guided.”
