Chapter: Permissibility and Conditions of Conveying Meaning in Narration
Hadith Number: Q3960
حدثنا يحيى بن موسى، حدثنا عبدالرزاق، اخبرنا معمر، عن ايوب، عن محمد بن سيرين قال: كنت اسمع الحديث من عشرة؛ اللفظ مختلف والمعنى واحد.
Muhammad bin Sirin says: I used to hear a hadith in ten different wordings, and the meaning of all was the same.
Hadith Number: Q3960
حدثنا احمد بن منيع، حدثنا محمد بن عبدالله الانصاري، عن ابن عون قال: كان إبراهيم النخعي، والحسن، والشعبي ياتون بالحديث على المعاني.
Ibn Aun says: Ibrahim Nakhai, Hasan Basri, and Shabi used to narrate hadith by meaning.
Hadith Number: Q3960
وكان القاسم بن محمد، ومحمد بن سيرين، ورجائ بن حيوة يعيدون الحديث على حروفه.
And Qasim bin Muhammad, Muhammad bin Sirin, and Raja bin Haywah used to narrate the hadith in their own words.

حدثنا علي بن خشرم، اخبرنا حفص بن غياث، عن عاصم الاحول، قال: قلت لابي عثمان النهدي: إنك تحدثنا بالحديث، ثم تحدثنا به على غير ما حدثتنا؟! قال: عليك بالسماع الاول.
Asim al-Ahwal says: I said to Abu Uthman Nahdi, "You narrate a hadith to us once, then narrate it again and it is different from the first time?" He replied, "Take what you heard the first time."
Hadith Number: Q3960
حدثنا الجارود، قال: حدثنا وكيع، عن الربيع بن صبيح، عن الحسن قال: إذا اصبت المعنى اجزاك.
Hasan al-Basri says: If you narrate the meaning correctly, then this is sufficient for you.
Hadith Number: Q3960
حدثنا علي بن حجر، اخبرنا عبد الله بن المبارك، عن سيف -هو ابن سليمان- قال: سمعت مجاهدا يقول: انقص من الحديث إن شئت، ولا تزد فيه.
Saif bin Sulaiman says that I heard Mujahid say: If you wish, narrate less in hadith, but do not add to it. (That is, do not add anything from yourself, narrate briefly, or narrate some phrases.)
Hadith Number: Q3960
حدثنا ابو عمار الحسين بن حريث، اخبرنا زيد بن حباب، عن رجل قال: خرج إلينا سفيان الثوري فقال: إن قلت لكم: إني احدثكم كما سمعت فلا تصدقوني، إنما هو المعنى.
Sufyan Thawri says: If I claim that I narrate to you exactly as I heard, then do not affirm me; this narration is by meaning.
Hadith Number: Q3960
اخبرنا الحسين بن حريث، قال: سمعت وكيعا يقول: إن لم يكن المعنى واسعا فقد هلك الناس.
Waki’ says: If narrating by meaning were not permissible, people would be destroyed.

Chapter: Trustworthy Narrators and Their Ranks and Grades
Hadith Number: Q3960
قال ابو عيسى: وإنما تفاضل اهل العلم بالحفظ والإتقان والتثبت عند السماع مع انه لم يسلم من الخطإ والغلط كبير احد من الائمة مع حفظهم.
Tirmidhi says: The scholars differ in their memorization, precision, and verification and recording of the narration of hadith; despite the strength of their memory, even the greatest Imam is not free from error, mistake, and slip.
Hadith Number: Q3960
حدثنا محمد بن حميد الرازي، حدثنا جرير، عن عمارة بن القعقاع قال: قال لي إبراهيم النخعي: إذا حدثتني؛ فحدثني عن ابي زرعة بن عمرو بن جرير؛ فإنه حدثني مرة بحديث، ثم سالته بعد ذلك بسنين فما اخرم منه حرفا.
Amarah bin Qaqa’ says that Ibrahim Nakha’i said to me: When you narrate hadith from me, narrate it from Abu Zur’ah bin Amr bin Jarir. Abu Zur’ah once narrated a hadith to me, and then after many years I asked him about it, and he had not left out even a single letter.
