It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ubadah bin Samit (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever does not recite Umm al-Qur'an (al-Fatihah), his prayer is not valid."

Chapter: The two pauses in prayer

Hadith Number: 1277
Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him) narrated that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would remain silent (i.e., pause) at two places during the prayer: when he entered the prayer (i.e., at the time of the opening supplication), and the second silence was after completing the recitation (i.e., before bowing for ruku‘). Sayyiduna Imran bin Husayn (may Allah be pleased with him) denied this, so the people wrote about this issue to Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka‘b (may Allah be pleased with him), and he replied that Samurah has spoken the truth. Imam Darimi (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Qatadah (may Allah have mercy on him) used to say there are three pauses (i.e., after the opening takbir, then after Surah al-Fatihah, then at the end of the recitation before ruku‘). (It is also like this in Safar al-Sa‘adat, because during the pause after Surah al-Fatihah, the follower can recite Surah al-Fatihah.) But in the marfu‘ hadith, only two pauses are mentioned.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would remain silent for a short while between the opening takbeer (takbir tahrimah) and the recitation (qira’ah). Abu Zur’ah said: I think Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said this with «اسكاتة» and «هنية» . I (Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah! May my parents be sacrificed for you, what do you recite during your silence between the takbeer and the recitation? He replied:“I recite: «اللهم باعد ........ والماء البارد» , that is: ‘O Allah, distance me from my sins as You have distanced the East from the West. O Allah, purify me of my sins as a white garment is purified of dirt. O Allah, wash away my sins with snow and cold water.’”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When the reciter says «غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ» , then those who are behind him (the followers in prayer) should say Ameen, and if this Ameen coincides with that of those in the heavens, all his previous sins will be forgiven."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the Imam says «غَيْرِ الْمَغْضُوبِ عَلَيْهِمْ وَلَا الضَّالِّينَ» , then you should say Ameen, because the angels also say Ameen and the Imam also says Ameen. So, whoever's saying Ameen coincides with the angels' saying Ameen, all his previous sins will be forgiven."

Hadith Number: 1282
It is narrated from Abu Bakr bin Abdur Rahman and Abu Salamah that both of them prayed behind Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him). When he went into bowing (ruku‘), he said «الله اكبر» , and when he raised his head from bowing, he said «سمع الله لمن حمده» , then he said: «ربنا ولك الحمد» . Then, while going into prostration (sajdah), he said «الله اكبر» , then when he raised his head from prostration, he said «الله اكبر» , then when he stood up for the second rak‘ah, he said «الله اكبر» . Then he said: "By the One in Whose hand is my soul, among you I am the one who most closely resembles the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) in prayer. The prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) was like this until he departed from this world."

Chapter: Raising the hands in bowing and prostration

Hadith Number: 1284
Narrated by Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) started the prayer, he would say «الله اكبر» and raise both his hands up to his shoulders (i.e., perform Raf‘ al-Yadayn), and when he would go into bowing (ruku‘), he would say the takbeer and raise his hands, and when he would raise his head from bowing, he would likewise raise his hands, but he would not raise his hands between the two prostrations or during prostration.
