Ubayyah bin Rifa’ah says that when Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) learned that Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) had built a palace for himself where the voices of the complainants could no longer reach, he immediately sent Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with him): When he arrived there, he took out a flint and kindled a fire with it, bought wood worth one dirham and set it on fire. Someone went and told Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that a man is doing such and such, he said that it is Muhammad bin Maslamah, and saying this, he came to him and swore that he had not said anything. Muhammad bin Maslamah said,“We will do only what we have been ordered, and if you have any message to send, we will deliver that too.”Saying this, he set fire to the door of the palace. Then Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) offered him provisions for the journey, but he did not accept it and returned. When he reached Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), it was midday, and the whole journey had taken him nineteen days. When Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) saw him, he said,“If we did not have a good opinion of you, we would have thought that perhaps you did not deliver our message to him.”He replied,“Why not! In response, he sent you greetings and apologized, and swore by Allah that he had not said anything of the sort.”Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked,“Did he give you provisions for the journey?”He replied,“I myself did not take them.”He said,“Then why did you not take them with you?”He replied,“I did not like that I should give him your order, and it should be cool for you and hot for me, while around me are the people of Madinah who are dying of hunger, and I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say that no person should go about satiated while leaving his neighbor hungry.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that during the last Hajj performed by Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) in his lifetime, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) returned to his mount. I used to teach him, and he found me waiting for him. At that time, we were in Mina. As soon as Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived, he said that a man came to Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and said, "So-and-so says that if Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) passes away, I will pledge allegiance to so-and-so." Upon this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "Tonight I will stand and warn the people to beware of and be cautious of the group that wants to usurp the caliphate." But I said to him, "O Commander of the Faithful! Do not do this, because during Hajj all kinds of people are present, including troublemakers and those with lowly thoughts. When you stand before the people to say something, they will overpower you. I fear that if you say something, they will spread it, will not remember it properly, and will not interpret it correctly. However, when you reach Madinah, which is the abode of migration and the abode of the Sunnah, and the cradle of pure scholars and dignitaries, then say what you wish to say with full confidence. Those people will understand your words and interpret them correctly." Upon hearing this, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "If I reach Madinah safely, the first thing I will do is present this matter before the people." At the end of Dhu al-Hijjah, when we reached Madinah, on Friday, I reached the mosque early in the morning, bumping into the blind. The narrator asked about the meaning of "bumping into the blind," and he explained that Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) did not care about any particular time, nor did he pay attention to heat or cold (he would ascend the pulpit whenever he wished). Anyway, I found Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) sitting to the right of the pulpit, who had arrived before me. I sat down next to him, and my knees were touching his knees. After a short while, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) was seen approaching. As soon as I saw him, I said, "Today he will say something from this pulpit that he has never said before." Sayyiduna Sa'id bin Zayd (may Allah be pleased with him) was surprised at this and said, "I do not think he will say anything that he has not said before." Meanwhile, Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) came and sat on the pulpit. When the muezzin finished the adhan, he stood up first and praised Allah, then said, "Amma ba'd: O people! Today I want to say something which has become necessary for me to say. Who knows, perhaps this is a prelude to my death. Therefore, whoever can remember and understand it well, should convey it to wherever his mount can reach. And whoever cannot remember it, it is not permissible for him to lie about me. Allah Almighty sent His Prophet with the truth, revealed His Book upon him, and among the commands revealed to him was the verse of stoning (rajm), which we read and memorized. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also implemented the punishment of stoning, and after him, we also implemented this punishment. I fear that after some time, someone may say, 'We do not find the verse of stoning in the Book of Allah,' and thus, by abandoning an obligation revealed by Allah, they will go astray. Remember! If a man or woman, being married, commits adultery and there are witnesses, or the woman is pregnant, or the person confesses the crime, then in the Book of Allah, stoning is a reality for such a person. Remember! We also used to read: 'Do not attribute yourselves to anyone other than your forefathers, for doing so is disbelief.' Remember! The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: 'Do not exaggerate about me as Isa (peace be upon him) was exaggerated about. I am only Allah's servant, so say: Allah's servant and His Messenger.' I have come to know that some of you are saying that when Umar dies, we will pledge allegiance to so-and-so. No one should be deceived by the fact that the pledge of allegiance to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) happened suddenly and in haste. Yes, it did happen that way, but Allah protected us from its evil. But now, among you, there is no one like Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to whom necks can be raised."
