Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that once we had a doubt regarding a surah of the Noble Qur'an; some said its verses were thirty-five and others said thirty-six. When this discussion increased, we went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) to have the matter decided. When we arrived, we found Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) whispering to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). We clarified the purpose of our visit and explained that we had differed regarding the recitation of a surah. Upon hearing this, the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned red. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was saying: "Recite the Noble Qur'an in the manner you have been taught."

Abu Juhaifah – whom Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to call Wahb al-Khair – narrates that I once heard Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) saying (during a sermon):“Shall I not tell you who is the best person in this Ummah after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)?”(Abu Juhaifah says: I said, ‘Of course,’ and I thought that there was no one better than him himself.)“He is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him). And shall I tell you who is the best person in this Ummah after Sayyiduna Abu Bakr al-Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him)? He is Sayyiduna Umar al-Faruq (may Allah be pleased with him).”

It is narrated from Wahb Suwai Rahimahullah that once Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said during a sermon: Who is the best person in this Ummah after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? I said: Commander of the Faithful! It is you. He said: No, after the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), the best person in this Ummah is Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), and after Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him), the best person is Sayyiduna Umar Farooq (may Allah be pleased with him), and there is nothing surprising in the fact that tranquility spoke upon the tongue of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him).

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) married his daughter, Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), to him, he sent with her as dowry a woolen garment, a leather pillow stuffed with grass, two hand mills, a water skin, and two pitchers. One day, Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), "By Allah! My chest has started to ache from drawing water from the well again and again. Some captives have come to your father, so go and request him for a servant." Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "By Allah! My hands have developed calluses from turning the hand mill." So she went to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) asked the reason for her coming. She replied that she had come to greet him. She felt shy to present her request before the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and returned. Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "What happened?" She said, "I felt shy to ask him for anything, so I returned." After that, both of us went together to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "O Messenger of Allah! My chest has started to ache from drawing water from the well again and again." Sayyida Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "My hands have developed calluses from turning the hand mill. Some captives have come to you, so please grant us one of them as a servant." Upon hearing this, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said, "By Allah! I cannot give you a servant while leaving the people of Suffa, whose stomachs are stuck to their backs and I have nothing to spend on them. Rather, I will sell them and spend their price on the people of Suffa." So both of them returned. At night, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to their house. The sheet they had was so small that if they covered their heads, their feet would be uncovered, and if they covered their feet, their heads would be uncovered. When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) saw them, both of them tried to get up, but the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stopped them and said, "After every prayer, say Subhan Allah, Alhamdulillah, and Allahu Akbar ten times each, and when you go to bed, say Subhan Allah thirty-three times, Alhamdulillah thirty-three times, and Allahu Akbar thirty-four times. (All your fatigue and illness will go away)." Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) says, "By Allah! Since the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught me these words, I have never abandoned them." Ibn Kawwa said, "Not even on the day of Siffin?" He replied, "O people of Iraq! May Allah understand you. No, not even on the day of Siffin."
