It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once his maternal aunt, Sayyida Umm Hufaid (may Allah be pleased with her), presented clarified butter, lizard, and cheese as a gift to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ate some of the clarified butter and cheese, but due to dislike, he left the lizard. However, others ate it from the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) dining mat. If eating it had been forbidden, it could never have been eaten at the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) dining mat, nor would the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) have permitted it to be eaten.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the day of Arafah, so-and-so (Fadl) was riding behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). He was a young man and began to look at women. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned his face away several times with his blessed hand, but he still kept glancing at them from the corner of his eyes. Upon this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Nephew! Today is such a day that whoever safeguards his ears, his eyes, and his tongue in it, Allah will forgive his sins."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that on the day of the Battle of Badr, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prayed in his tent, saying: "O Allah! Fulfill Your promise. O Allah! If (today this handful of Muslims is destroyed) then never again will You be worshipped on the earth." Seeing this, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) stepped forward, took the hand of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and said: O Messenger of Allah! You have supplicated much to your Lord; He will surely fulfill His promise. Thereupon Allah the Exalted revealed this verse: «‏‏‏‏﴿سَيُهْزَمُ الْجَمْعُ وَيُوَلُّونَ الدُّبُرَ﴾ [القمر: 45] » "Soon this assembly will be defeated and they will turn their backs and flee."

The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) rebuked him. He said: "Muhammad! Are you rebuking me even though you know that no one in this entire city has a greater assembly than mine?" At this, Jibreel (peace be upon him) brought down this verse: «﴿أَرَأَيْتَ الَّذِي يَنْهَى o عَبْدًا إِذَا صَلَّى o أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَانَ عَلَى الْهُدَى o أَوْ أَمَرَ بِالتَّقْوَى o أَرَأَيْتَ إِنْ كَذَّبَ وَتَوَلَّى﴾ [العلق: 9-13] » "Have you seen the one who forbids a servant when he prays? Have you seen if he is upon guidance, or enjoins righteousness? Have you seen if he denies and turns away?" Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says: By the One in Whose hand is my soul, if he had called his companions, the angels of punishment, 'Zabaniyah', would have seized him.
