It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was afflicted with hardship, he used to say: «لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ الْحَلِيمُ الْعَظِيمُ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ رَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْعَظِيمِ لَا إِلٰهَ إِلَّا اللّٰهُ رَبُّ السَّمَوَاتِ وَرَبُّ الْأَرْضِ وَرَبُّ الْعَرْشِ الْكَرِيمِ» "There is no deity except Allah, the Most Great, the Most Forbearing. There is no deity except Allah, the Lord of the Mighty Throne. There is no deity except Allah, the Lord of the heavens and the earth and the Noble Throne." After this, he would supplicate.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came to one of his daughters (his granddaughter), who was in the throes of death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) took her and placed her in his lap, and in that state her soul departed. Tears flowed from the eyes of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and Sayyidah Umm Ayman (may Allah be pleased with her) also began to weep. Someone said to her: Are you weeping in the presence of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)? She replied: When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) is also weeping, why should I not weep? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I am not weeping; this is mercy. When the soul of the believer departs from both his sides, he is praising Allah."

A man asked Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), "Is the Friday ghusl (ritual bath) obligatory?" He replied, "No, whoever wishes may perform ghusl (and whoever does not wish, may leave it). I will tell you how the practice of ghusl on Friday began. People used to be poor, wore woolen clothes, and would carry water on their backs to irrigate the gardens. The Prophet’s Mosque was small and its roof was low. When people worked wearing woolen clothes, they would sweat. The pulpit of the Prophet (peace be upon him) was also small and had only three steps. Once, on a Friday, people were sweating in their woolen clothes, and the smell was spreading, causing discomfort to some. The Prophet (peace be upon him), while he was on the pulpit, also sensed the smell. So he said: 'O people! When you come for Friday (prayer), come after performing ghusl, and whoever has the best perfume, let him apply it.'"
