It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that once a man set out on a journey, and two men started following him. Behind those two men, there was another man who was telling them to turn back. He kept telling them until both of them turned back. He said to the traveler, "These two were devils. I kept following them until I succeeded in sending them back. When you reach the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), convey my greetings to him and give him this message: We have collected some charity; if it is appropriate for him, we will send it to him." After this, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade traveling alone.

When he woke up, one of his noble wives asked, "You were laughing in your sleep, was everything alright?" He replied, "I was feeling happiness for those people of my Ummah who set out on a sea journey to frighten the enemy; they are striving in the path of Allah." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned great goodness for them.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) intended to set out on a journey, he would recite this supplication: «اَللّٰهُمَّ أَنْتَ الصَّاحِبُ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْخَلِيفَةُ فِي الْأَهْلِ اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ الضُّبْنَةِ فِي السَّفَرِ وَالْكَآبَةِ فِي الْمُنْقَلَبِ اَللّٰهُمَّ اقْبِضْ لَنَا الْأَرْضَ وَهَوِّنْ عَلَيْنَا السَّفَرَ» "O Allah! You are my companion in travel and the guardian of my family in my absence. O Allah! I seek refuge with You from the hardship of travel and distress upon return. O Allah! Thus, when the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, he did not leave behind any dinar or dirham, nor any slave or slave-girl, rather his armor was held in pledge with a Jew, for which the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) had taken thirty sa’ of barley.
