Abu Sa‘d says that once I saw Sayyiduna Wathilah in the mosque of Damascus during prayer; he spat to his left under his foot and rubbed it with his foot. When he finished the prayer, I said to him: "You are a companion of the Prophet (peace be upon him), yet you spit in the mosque?" He replied: "I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) doing the same."

Abu Siba’ says that once I bought a she-camel from the house of Sayyiduna Wathilah. When I was about to leave with the she-camel, I met Sayyiduna Wathilah. He was coming, pulling his cloak. He asked me,“O servant of Allah, have you bought it?”I said,“Yes.”He asked,“Did they tell you everything about it?”I said,“What do you mean by everything?”He said,“This one that appears healthy and strong—tell me, do you want to travel on it or slaughter it for meat?”I said,“I want to go for Hajj on it.”He said,“Then know that there is a hole in its hoof.”At this, the owner of the she-camel said,“May Allah have mercy on your condition! Do you want to ruin my deal?”He replied,“I heard the Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) say: ‘It is not permissible for a man to sell something without disclosing its defect, and it is not lawful for one who knows of the defect not to mention it.’”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah that one day I was present in the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), when a man came and said, "O Messenger of Allah! I have committed one of the limits set by Allah, so impose the punishment on me." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) turned away from him; this happened three times. After that, the prayer was established. After completing the prayer, he came again for the fourth time and repeated his statement. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) called him near and asked, "Did you not perform ablution well and join us in the prayer just now?" He said, "Why not!" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "Go, for this is the expiation for your sin."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Wathilah that I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The greatest slanders are three: First, that a man slanders with his eyes and says, "I saw such and such," while he did not see it. Second, that a man slanders his parents and attributes himself to someone other than his father. And third, that a person says he heard something from me, while he did not hear it from me.

Hayan says that once I went with Sayyiduna Wathilah to Abu al-Aswad Jurashi during his illness of death. Sayyiduna Wathilah greeted him and sat down. Abu al-Aswad took his right hand and began to rub it on his eyes and face, because Sayyiduna Wathilah had pledged allegiance to the blessed hand of the Prophet (peace be upon him) with that hand. Sayyiduna Wathilah said to him, "I want to ask you something." Abu al-Aswad asked, "What is that?" He asked, "What is your opinion about your Lord?" Abu al-Aswad replied with a gesture of his head, "It is good." He said, "Then rejoice, for I heard the Prophet (peace be upon him) say: Allah Almighty says, 'I am as My servant thinks of Me. So let him think of Me as he wishes.'"
