It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he became ill, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit him. He said: O Messenger of Allah! Should I not bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“No.”He said: Should I bequeath half of my wealth? He said:“No.”He said: Should I bequeath one third of my wealth? He said:“Yes! Bequeath one third, and one third is also much.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa'd (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whatever you spend on your family, you will be rewarded for it, even the morsel that you put in your wife's mouth, you will be rewarded for that as well."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once I submitted in the court of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him): O Messenger of Allah! Upon whom do the severest trials come? He said:“Upon the Prophets (peace be upon them), then upon the righteous, then upon people in order according to their ranks. A person is tested according to the strength of his religion; if his religion is strong, his trials are increased, and if there is weakness in his religion, his trials are lightened. And trials continue to befall a person until, when he walks upon the earth, there remains no sin upon him.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he became ill in Makkah Mukarramah, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit him. I said: O Messenger of Allah! Can I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? He said,“No.”I asked about half, and he still forbade it. Then when I asked about a third of my wealth, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Yes! You may bequeath a third, and a third is still a lot. Remember! If you leave your family in a good state, it is much better than leaving them in such a condition that they are forced to beg from people. Whatever you spend on yourself is charity, whatever you spend on your family is charity, and whatever you spend on your wife is also charity.”The narrator also says that at that time Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) had only one daughter. Then Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned migration, so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“May Allah have mercy on Ibn Afra. It may be that Allah will raise you to such a high status that a people will benefit from you and others will be harmed.”

Once, Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) heard one of his sons making this supplication:“O Allah! I ask You for Paradise, its blessings, its silk garments, and such-and-such things, and I seek refuge with You from the Fire of Hell, its chains, and its shackles.”So he said to him,“You have asked Allah for great good and sought refuge with Him from great evil. I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: ‘A people will soon come who will exceed the limits in supplication.’”And he recited this verse:“ «﴿ادْعُوا رَبَّكُمْ تَضَرُّعًا وَخُفْيَةً إِنَّهُ لَا يُحِبُّ الْمُعْتَدِينَ﴾ [الأعراف: 55] » ‘Call upon your Lord with humility and in secret. Surely, He does not like those who exceed the limits.’”It is sufficient for you to say: «اَللّٰهُمَّ إِنِّي أَسْأَلُكَ الْجَنَّةَ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ وَأَعُوذُ بِكَ مِنْ النَّارِ وَمَا قَرَّبَ إِلَيْهَا مِنْ قَوْلٍ أَوْ عَمَلٍ» “O Allah! I ask You for Paradise and for every word and deed that brings one closer to it, and I seek refuge with You from Hell and from every word and deed that brings one closer to it.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) turned to the right side to say salam, his right cheek would be visible with its brightness, and when he turned to the left side to say salam, the whiteness of his left cheek would be seen.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“I am amazed at the decree and decision of Allah regarding the believing servant: if any good comes to him, he gives thanks to his Lord, and if any calamity befalls him, he says «اَلْحَمْدُ لِلّٰهِ» and is patient (and both patience and gratitude are beloved to Allah). The believer is rewarded for everything, even for the morsel that he lifts and puts into his wife’s mouth.”

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas (may Allah be pleased with him) that once he fell ill in Makkah Mukarramah. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to visit him. He did not like the idea of dying in the land from which he had migrated. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said twice:“May Allah’s mercy descend upon Sa’d bin ‘Afra.”And he had only one daughter. Sayyiduna Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah! Can I bequeath all my wealth in the way of Allah? He replied:“No.”He asked about half, but he was also forbidden.
