Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) was commanded to prostrate on seven (parts): his face, his two hands, his two knees, and his two feet, and he (peace be upon him) was forbidden from gathering up his hair or clothes.

The Imam narrated, through his esteemed teacher Makhzumi’s chain, a narration from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) similar to the one mentioned above, but he reported these words:“or that you ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) gather your clothes or hair (this has been prohibited).”Hazrat Tawus (may Allah have mercy on him) used to pass his hand over his forehead and nose and say that this is one and the same limb.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to prostrate on seven parts, and not to gather my hair or clothes. (Those seven parts are:) the forehead and the nose, both hands, both knees, and both feet."

Sayyiduna Abbas bin Sahl Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that some Ansari companions gathered at one place, among them were Sayyiduna Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi, Abu Humayd Sa’idi, and Abu Usaid Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with them). They mentioned the prayer of the Noble Prophet (peace be upon him). So Sayyiduna Abu Humayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“Allow me to describe it to you, for I am the most knowledgeable among you about it.”They said,“Then describe it.”He said,“I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) perform ablution excellently, then he began the prayer,”and thus he narrated part of the hadith. And he said,“Then when he (peace be upon him) performed prostration, he firmly placed his forehead and nose on the ground, and kept his arms away from his sides, then he (peace be upon him) raised his head from the prostration.”(After hearing this narration) all the companions said,“The prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) was like this.”

In the lengthy hadith of Sayyiduna Rifa’ah (may Allah be pleased with him), these words are narrated: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to the man who had prayed and whom the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) instructed to repeat the prayer: "Then when you prostrate, make your face and both hands firm, until every bone (of your body) is settled and at ease in its place."

Sayyiduna Bara’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to prostrate on the base of his thumb and little finger.

Sayyiduna Abbas bin Sahl (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that (once) Sayyiduna Abu Humayd Sa’idi, Abu Usaid Sa’idi, Sahl bin Sa’d Sa’idi, and Muhammad bin Maslamah (may Allah be pleased with them) gathered together. Then Sayyiduna Abu Humayd (may Allah be pleased with him) said,“I know the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) better than all of you.”(The noble companions, may Allah be pleased with them, said,“Then please describe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.”) He said,“When the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) stood for prayer, he would say «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏. Then, after narrating some of the hadith, he said, ‘Then when the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) performed sajdah, he would firmly place his forehead and nose on the ground, and he would keep his arms away from his sides and place his hands in line with his shoulders. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would raise his head until every bone returned to its place (then he, peace and blessings be upon him, would continue to pray with the same calmness and tranquility) until he (peace and blessings be upon him) finished.’”

Sayyiduna Wa'il bin Hujr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that I came to Madinah Munawwarah, so I said (in my heart) that I will definitely observe the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) carefully. So I saw the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that when he started the prayer, he said «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏ and raised both his hands, so I saw the thumbs of both his hands at the level of his ears. Then he narrated some more of the hadith and said that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) bowed and prostrated, so his blessed head was between his hands to the same extent as it was when he started the prayer (i.e., at the level of the ears).

Hazrat Alqamah bin Wa'il narrates from his father, Sayyiduna Wa'il (may Allah be pleased with him), that when the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prostration, he would join his fingers together.

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata that he was sitting with a group of the noble companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and they mentioned the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him). Sayyiduna Abu Humayd Sa’idi (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I remember the prayer of the Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him) better than all of you. I saw that when he said «‏‏‏‏اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» ‏‏‏‏, he would raise his hands to the level of his shoulders. Then when he bowed (in ruku’), he would firmly place his hands on his knees and bend his back. Then when he raised his blessed head, he would stand up straight until every bone returned to its place. Then when he prostrated, he would neither spread his hands out nor keep them completely close, and he would direct the tips of his fingers towards the qiblah. Then when he sat in tashahhud after two rak’ahs, he would sit on his left foot. Then when he sat in the last rak’ah, he would bring his left foot forward and sit on his buttocks."
