Chapter 56: Adhan for prayer after its time has passed
Hadith Number: 409
Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that one night we were traveling with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), so some people said, "O Messenger of Allah, if you would allow us to camp at the end of the night (it would be very good)." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said, "I fear that you may sleep through the morning prayer." Then the complete hadith was narrated. And it is mentioned that then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) woke up, then he said, "O Bilal, get up and give the call to prayer (adhan) to gather the people for prayer."

It is narrated from Hazrat Thabit Banani (may Allah have mercy on him) that Hazrat Abdullah bin Rabah (may Allah have mercy on him) was narrating hadith to the people in the central mosque, while among the people was also Sayyiduna Imran bin Husain (may Allah be pleased with him). Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) asked, "Who is this young man?" They replied, "He is a person from among the Ansar." So Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "People are well aware of their own hadith, reflect on how you are narrating hadith, for I was the seventh among seven people with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that night." Then Sayyiduna Imran (may Allah be pleased with him) said, "I do not think that anyone besides me remains who remembers this hadith." So they said, "I heard Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate that we were on a journey with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: 'If you do not find water tomorrow, you will become thirsty, so the hasty people set out.' Sayyiduna Abu Qatadah (may Allah be pleased with him) says, 'And I stayed with the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that night, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) began to doze off while sitting on his camel, then he slept (and leaned to one side on the camel), so I supported him. Then he dozed off a second time and leaned to one side, so I supported him. Then he dozed off and leaned to one side until he was about to fall, then he woke up. I supported him and straightened him, so he said: "Who is this person?" I said, "Abu Qatadah." He asked: "How long have you been walking like this?" I said, "Since the night." So he said: "May Allah protect you as you have protected His Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him)." Then he said: "If we camp at the end of the night, it will be better." So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) leaned towards a tree and I leaned with him. He asked: "Do you see anyone?" I said, "Yes, here is a rider, here is a rider, here are two riders, here are three riders," until we became seven. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Guard our prayer, so that we do not miss the Fajr prayer." So they all slept until the heat of the sun woke them. Then they got up and went a little distance and camped. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: "Do you have water?" I said, "Yes, I have water in my ablution vessel." He said: "Bring it to me." I brought the vessel to him, and he said: "Take from it, take from it." So we all performed ablution from it, and a sip remained in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "O Abu Qatadah, save it, for there is a wondrous news for it." Sayyiduna Bilal (may Allah be pleased with him) gave the call to prayer, then they performed two rak'ahs of Fajr, then they performed the Fajr prayer, then they mounted (and set off). Some people, talking among themselves, said, "We have been negligent in performing our prayer (what is its expiation)?" The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "What are you saying? If it is a worldly matter, you know best, and if it is a religious matter, then refer it to me." We said, "O Messenger of Allah, we have been negligent in our prayer." He said: "Indeed, there is no negligence in sleep, rather negligence is in wakefulness. When any one of you forgets his prayer, let him pray it when he remembers, and on the next day, let him perform it at its time." Then the complete hadith was mentioned.

And the explanation of the evidence that the Prophet صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم , in the narration of Abu Sa'id (may Allah be pleased with him), commanded that (the one who hears the adhan) should say just as the muezzin says, until he (the muezzin) finishes (the adhan), and you صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم would also say just as the muezzin says, until he becomes silent, except for "Hayya 'ala as-Salah" and "Hayya 'ala al-Falah" (for their response).

Then he said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه» "I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." Then he said «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» "Come to prayer," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ» "There is no power to avoid sin nor strength to do good except with Allah's help." Then he said «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» "Come to success," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ» "There is no power to avoid sin nor strength to do good except with Allah's help." The freed slave of Sayyiduna Uthman bin Affan, Hazrat Muhammad bin Yusuf (may Allah have mercy on him), narrates that when the muezzin gave the adhan and said: «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ» "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest," then Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with him) said «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ» so he said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah," Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» he said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه» "I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." Hazrat Muhammad bin Amr narrates that my respected father narrated from my grandfather that I was with Sayyiduna Muawiyah bin Abi Sufyan (may Allah be pleased with them) when the muezzin said «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ» "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، للهُ أَكْبَرُ» , then he (the muezzin) said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» "I bear witness that there is no deity worthy of worship except Allah," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» , then he (the muezzin) said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه» "I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah." So Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said «أَشْهَدُ أَنْ مُحَمَّدٌ رَسُولُ ٱللَّٰه» , then he (the muezzin) said «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» "Come to prayer," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ» "There is no power to do good and no strength to avoid evil except with Allah's help." Then he (the muezzin) called «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» "Come to success," so Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ» , then he (the muezzin) said «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» "Allah is the Greatest, Allah is the Greatest, there is no deity except Allah." So Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) also said «اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، اللهُ أَكْبَرُ، لَا إِلَهَ إِلَّا اللهُ» . Then he said that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to say likewise. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the hadith of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) is also related to this chapter; I have mentioned it in another chapter. Imam Abu Bakr (may Allah have mercy on him) says that the meaning of the hadith of Sayyidah Umm Habibah (may Allah be pleased with her) is that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), while responding to the adhan, said the same words as the muezzin until he finished the adhan, except for «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» and «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» , (in response to these he said «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ» ). Likewise, the meaning of the hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Saeed Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) is also that you should respond to the adhan in the same way as the muezzin says, except for «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» and «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» . The ahadith of Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with them) explain these two ahadith. In the ahadith of Sayyiduna Umar and Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with them), it is stated that whoever hears the adhan for prayer from the muezzin should repeat the words just as the muezzin says, except for the words «حَيَّ عَلَى الصَّلَاةِ» and «حَيَّ عَلَى الْفَلَاحِ» , in response to these words he should say «لَا حَوْلَ وَلَا قُوَّةَ إِلَّا بِاللَٰهِ» .
