Hazrat Ash'ath narrates that Hasan Basri used to say: The confession of a slave is not valid in any intentional or unintentional crime in which his life is at stake.

Hazrat Abu Malik Ashja'i narrates that the people of Harmuz and Hai state that Harmuz came to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) and said: Indeed, I have committed a hadd (punishable offense). He (Ali) said: Repent to Allah and conceal your sin. He (Harmuz) said: O Commander of the Faithful! Purify me. He (Ali) said: O Qanbar! Stand up and carry out the hadd on him, and he himself will count his punishment. So when he stops you, then stop. And Harmuz was a slave.

Hazrat Yusuf bin Mahak narrates that a slave of someone from among the people of Makkah stole the sheet of Hazrat Safwan bin Umayyah. He was brought to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ordered his hand to be cut off. Upon this, Hazrat Safwan said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! Will you cut off his hand because of my garment? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Why did you not think of this before bringing him to me?

Hazrat Abdul Malik bin Abi Sulaiman narrates that it is reported from Hazrat Ata regarding a slave who commits theft. He said: His hand should be cut off.

Hazrat Abdullah bin Aamir narrates that Hazrat Abu Bakr cut off the hand of a slave who had committed theft.

Ismail narrates that it is reported from Hazrat Sha’bi regarding four men who testified against a man for committing adultery, and one of the witnesses was not just. He said: The punishment (hadd) will be dropped from that person because the witnesses must be four.

Hazrat Ash'ath narrates that Hazrat Sha'bi said: When four witnesses testify to adultery and all of them are not just, then they will not be flogged.

Hazrat Ash'ath narrates that Hasan Basri said: When four men testify against a person for adultery and these four are not declared just (‘adil), then the punishment (hadd) will be dropped from that person and none of these four will be flogged.

Hazrat Abdur Rahman narrates that I was sitting with Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man came and said, "O Commander of the Faithful! Indeed, I have committed theft." So Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) rebuked him severely. The man returned a second time and said, "Indeed, I have committed theft." Upon this, Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him, "Indeed, you have testified against yourself twice." The narrator says: So he gave the order regarding him, and his hand was cut off. I saw his hand hanging from his neck.

Hazrat Sabi’ Abu Salim narrates that I was present with Hazrat Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when a man was brought who had confessed to theft. Upon this, Hazrat Hasan said,“Perhaps you snatched it?”so that he might say no. This continued until the man confessed before him two or three times. Then, by his order, the man’s hand was cut off.
