Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Sabit (may Allah have mercy on him) narrates that Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) came on the occasion of Hajj, so Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) came to him. Then people mentioned Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), upon which Hazrat Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) said some words. Hazrat Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) became angry and said: You are saying this about such a man that I myself heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say three qualities about him. And for me, to have even one of these qualities would be dearer than the world and whatever is in it. I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“Whoever’s friend I am, Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) is also his friend.”I heard the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“You are to me as Harun (peace be upon him) was to Musa (peace be upon him), except that there is no prophet after me.”And I heard the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“I will surely give the flag to such a man whom Allah and His Messenger love.”

No one before me has ever said this, and no one after me will say it except a liar.

Hazrat Hakam (may Allah have mercy on him), Hazrat Minhal (may Allah have mercy on him), and Isa (may Allah have mercy on him)—all these personalities state that Hazrat Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila (may Allah have mercy on him) said: Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) used to go out in winter wearing a lower garment and a sheet, both of thin cloth. And in summer, he would go out in a warm cloak and heavy clothes! So people began to say to Hazrat Abdur Rahman: If you (may Allah have mercy on him) ask your father, he will tell you, because he converses with him at night. So I asked my father: People see something in the Commander of the Faithful that they find strange? He asked: What is that? I said: In intense heat, you (may Allah be pleased with him) go out in a warm cloak and heavy clothes, and you do not care about it. And in severe cold, you (may Allah be pleased with him) go out in two thin garments and small sheets, and you do not care about it at all, nor do you protect yourself from the cold. Have you (may Allah have mercy on him) heard anything from him about this? Because people have told me to ask you to inquire from Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when you speak to him at night about this matter. So when at night he conversed with Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), he said: O Commander of the Faithful, people have observed something about you. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: What is that? He said: In intense heat, you (may Allah be pleased with him) go out in a warm cloak or heavy clothes. And in severe cold, you (may Allah be pleased with him) go out in two thin garments and sheets, and you do not care about it, nor do you try to protect yourself from the cold! Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: O Abu Laila, were you not with us at the Battle of Khaybar? I said: Why not! By Allah, I was with you. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and he went with the people, but he returned defeated. Then he sent Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), but he too returned defeated. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Surely, I will give the flag to a man who loves Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), and Allah and His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) love him. Allah will grant him victory. He is not one who turns his back and flees. Then the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) sent a messenger to call me. I presented myself, and I was suffering from an eye ailment and could not see anything. So the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) put his saliva in my eye, then prayed: O Allah! Protect him from cold and heat. Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Since then, neither cold nor heat has ever harmed me.

Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O group of Quraysh! Allah, the Exalted, will surely send a man from among you. Indeed, Allah has chosen his heart for faith. So he will kill you, or he said: he will strike your necks. Then Hazrat Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Am I that person? The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: No. Hazrat Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Am I that person? The Prophet (peace be upon him) replied: No, rather it is the one who mends shoes. And the Prophet (peace be upon him) had given a shoe to Hazrat Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) in which he had put a patch.

He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: No. Then Hazrat Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, stood up and said: O Messenger of Allah صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ! Am I that person?
