Ali Asadi narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) taught him this: Whenever the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) mounted his ride to set out on a journey, he would say Takbeer three times and then recite:“Glory is to Him Who has subjected this (ride) to us, and we could not have subdued it (by ourselves).”O Allah! We ask You for goodness and piety in this journey, and for deeds that please You. O Allah! Make this journey easy for us and fold up its distance for us. O Allah! You are the Companion in the journey and the Guardian of the family. O Allah! I seek refuge in You from the hardship of travel, from witnessing any unpleasant sight (during the journey or upon return), and from any evil befalling my family, wealth, or children upon my return. The narrator states: When the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) would return, he would recite these same words and add these phrases: (We are) returning, repenting, worshipping, and praising our Lord.

Ali bin Rabi’ah Asadi narrates: Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) mounted his ride, and he recited“Bismillah.”When he sat firmly upon it, he recited:“All praise is due to Allah, Who has honored us, enabled us to travel on land and sea, provided us with pure sustenance, and granted us superiority over many of His creation. Glory be to the One Who has subjected this (mount) to us, for we could not have subdued it (by ourselves). Surely, to our Lord we shall return.”Then he said“Allahu Akbar”three times, then said:“O Allah! Forgive me, for surely none forgives sins except You.”Then Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) stated that once the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) did the same, and at that time I was riding behind him.

Ali bin Rabi’ah narrates: I was present with Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) when an animal was brought so that he could ride it. When he placed his foot in the stirrup, he recited Bismillah. When he sat upright on the back of the animal, he said Alhamdulillah three times, then recited:“Glory be to Him Who has subjected this (to us), and we could never have accomplished this (by ourselves).”This verse continues up to:“Indeed, to our Lord we will surely return.”Then he said Alhamdulillah three times, then Allahu Akbar three times, then said:“(O Allah) You are pure, I have wronged myself, so forgive me, for none forgives sins except You.”Then he smiled. I asked: O Commander of the Faithful, what made you smile? He replied: I saw the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) do as I have done. Then he smiled, so I asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what made you smile? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Your Lord is pleased with His servant when he says, ‘O my Lord, forgive me.’ Allah Almighty says: My servant knows that none forgives sins except Me.”
