Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: During the sacred time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up to perform prayer. He stood for a very long time, then he went into bowing (ruku‘) and performed a very long bowing. Then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but it was shorter than the first standing. Then he bowed again and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the first bowing. Then he raised his head, then he bent down to go into prostration (sajdah) and performed prostration. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up for the second rak‘ah and performed a long standing, but it was shorter than the previous standing. Then he went into bowing and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the previous bowing. Then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but it was shorter than the previous standing. Then he went into bowing and performed a long bowing, but it was shorter than the previous bowing. Then he raised his head and bent down for prostration, then he performed prostration. Then, after finishing the prayer, the Prophet (peace be upon him) said:“O people! Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), perform prayer, give charity, and acknowledge the greatness of Allah. O Ummah of Muhammad! No one gets as angry as Allah does when His servant commits adultery or when His maidservant commits adultery. O Ummah of Muhammad! If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much.”

Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up in a state of anxiety, then he (peace be upon him) said: "These are signs which Allah sends. They do not appear because of anyone's death or life, rather Allah sends them to instill fear in His servants. When you see any of these things, turn towards the remembrance of Allah and seek forgiveness from Him." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace be upon him) that "turn towards His remembrance" means the prayer of eclipse (Salat al-Kusuf), because the word "remembrance" (dhikr) is used for prayer, or because there is remembrance of Allah in it. Therefore, the word "remembrance" is used for prayer.

Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was shooting arrows in Madinah Munawwarah when a solar eclipse occurred. I put the arrows aside and thought: By Allah! Today I will definitely find out what the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) does regarding a solar eclipse. The narrator says: I went to the service of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) at that time, and he was performing prayer. The Prophet (peace be upon him) had raised both his hands, he was reciting «سبحان الله الحمدالله الله اكبر لا اله الا اللہ» , and supplicating, until when the eclipse ended, he recited two surahs and then performed two rak‘ahs.

It is narrated about Tha’laba bin ‘Abad ‘Abdi that he was present during the sermon of Sayyiduna Samurah bin Jundub (may Allah be pleased with him). During his sermon, he narrated a hadith from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Sayyiduna Samurah (may Allah be pleased with him) stated: During the blessed era of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), once I and a boy from among the Ansar were practicing archery until the sun became as high as two spears, or perhaps three spears, and the horizon appeared dark to the observer (i.e., a solar eclipse occurred). One of us said to his companion: Let us go to the mosque. By Allah! This state of the sun will bring a new command from the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) regarding his Ummah. The narrator says: We went to the mosque and found the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) there. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came towards the people. The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) advanced and began to lead us in prayer, which was the longest prayer he (peace and blessings be upon him) ever led us in, but we did not hear his voice. Then he (peace and blessings be upon him) performed prostration, which was the longest prostration we ever performed in any prayer, but we did not hear his voice. Then, after performing the second rak‘ah in the same manner, he sat down. The narrator says: As soon as he (peace and blessings be upon him) sat in the second rak‘ah, the sun became bright, so he (peace and blessings be upon him) concluded the prayer with salam.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) performed prayer, and the people prayed behind him. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood for a long time, as long as it takes to recite Surah Al-Baqarah. Then he bowed for a long time, then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but it was less than the first standing. Then he bowed again for a long time, but it was less than the first bowing. Then he went into prostration. Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up and stood for a long time, but it was less than the previous standing. Then he bowed for a long time, but it was less than the previous bowing. Then he went into prostration. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) completed the prayer, the sun had become bright again. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone's death or life. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), remember Allah." The people said: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! We saw you, you reached forward as if to take something, then we saw you step back. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: I saw Paradise (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words:) Paradise was shown to me, so I tried to take a bunch of its grapes. If I had taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. And I saw Hell; I have never seen a scene as terrifying as today. I saw that the majority of its inhabitants were women. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), what is the reason for this? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Because of their ingratitude. It was asked: Do they disbelieve in Allah? He (peace be upon him) said: They are ungrateful to their husbands and deny favors. If you do good to one of them for a lifetime, then she sees something displeasing from you, she will say: By Allah! I have never seen any good from you.

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the blessed era of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), we used to consider the (apparent) signs as a sign of blessing, whereas you consider them as something to frighten. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Habib bin Abu Thabit has narrated this report from Tawus, from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed eight bowings (ruku) in the solar eclipse prayer and four prostrations (sajdah). This narration is not authentic because Habib did not hear this narration from Tawus. Similarly, the narration attributed to Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed the eclipse prayer in this manner is also not correct, because we do not use the ahadith of narrators like Hanish and those similar to him as evidence. Likewise, we also disregard the narrations dictated by them.
