Sayyiduna Mughira bin Shu’bah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. This happened on the day when (the son of the Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him) passed away. People said: This eclipse has occurred because of the death of Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him). So the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), supplicate and perform prayer until they become clear.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates regarding the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (He said:) "Indeed, the sun and the moon do not eclipse because of anyone’s death or life, rather both are signs from Allah Almighty. When you see either of them (in the state of eclipse), then perform prayer." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The command to perform prayer at the time of a solar or lunar eclipse means that if either one of them is eclipsed, prayer should be performed. It is not the case that the command to perform prayer is only when both are eclipsed at the same time.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up and we stood up following him. Then he said: "O people! Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. If either of them is eclipsed, then come to the mosques (that is, perform the eclipse prayer)." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In this narration, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) has commanded to perform prayer at the time of a solar or lunar eclipse, and this is the intended purpose. So here, the purpose has been mentioned in absolute terms with its cause, and that is the mosques, because prayer is performed in the mosque. It is not that merely coming to the mosque at the time of a solar or lunar eclipse will suffice if the prayer is not performed.

Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "In the prayer performed at the appearance of the sign, there will be six bowings (ruku) and four prostrations (sujood)." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): By this, he means that in the prayer performed at the time of the appearance of the signs, it is necessary for a person to perform two units (rak'ahs), in each of which he should bow three times and prostrate twice. This is clarified by the narration transmitted from Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) on the authority of Abdul Malik bin Abu Sulaiman from Ata.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) performed prayer, and the people prayed behind him. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood for a long time, about as long as it takes to recite Surah Al-Baqarah, then he bowed (ruku‘). He made a long ruku‘, then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but it was less than the first standing. Then he made a long ruku‘, but it was less than the first ruku‘. Then he prostrated (sajdah). Then he stood for a long time, but it was less than the previous standing. Then he made a long ruku‘, but it was less than the previous ruku‘. Then he raised his head and stood for a long time, but it was less than the previous standing. Then he made a long ruku‘, but it was less than the previous ruku‘. Then he went into prostration. When he finished the prayer, the sun had become bright again. He said:“Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of the death or life of anyone. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), remember Allah.”The people said: O Messenger of Allah! We saw you reach forward as if to take something, then we saw you step back. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I saw Paradise (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words), Paradise was shown to me, so I tried to take a bunch of its grapes. If I had taken it, you would have eaten from it as long as the world remains. And I saw Hellfire. I have never seen a scene as terrifying as today. I saw that the majority of its inhabitants are women. The people asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! What is the reason for that? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Because of their ingratitude. It was asked: Do they disbelieve in Allah? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: They are ungrateful to their husbands and deny favors. If you do good to one of them for a long time, and then she sees something from you that she dislikes, she will say: By Allah! I have never seen any good from you. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The various types of the eclipse prayer will soon be discussed in detail in the fifth section, in the type related to actions, which are among the permissible actions that are subject to difference, if Allah wills and makes it easy.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were sitting with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a solar eclipse occurred. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) stood up in anxiety, dragging his cloak, and entered the mosque. He performed two units of prayer. While he was still praying, the eclipse ended. This eclipse occurred at the time of the death of the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) son, Sayyiduna Ibrahim (may Allah be pleased with him), so some people said: The eclipse happened because of Ibrahim’s death. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“O people! Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone’s death. When you see them (in the state of eclipse), supplicate until the eclipse is over.”(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him),“Supplicate,”means that you should perform prayer, because sometimes the Arabs use the word supplication for prayer.

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We were present with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) when a solar eclipse occurred. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) hurriedly went inside the mosque, dragging his lower garment (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words: he was dragging his garment). People also gathered around him. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in two units of prayer, just as you perform prayer. The eclipse ended. The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) turned towards the people, and they gathered around him. He said: Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah, by which Allah causes fear in His servants. These two do not eclipse because of anyone’s death. (The narrator says) The son of the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) had passed away. (The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said) When you see any of these things (i.e., when you see an eclipse), then keep performing prayer until the eclipse ends. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The statement of Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led them in two units of prayer, just as you perform prayer, means: just as you perform two units of prayer for the eclipse, in which there are four bowings (ruku) and four prostrations (sujood), as we have mentioned earlier.
