Eclipse Prayer - Command to supplicate and seek forgiveness along with prayer during an eclipse
Hadith Number: 2836
Sayyiduna Abu Musa Ash'ari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: In the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there was a solar eclipse, so he stood up in anxiety. We feared that the Hour (Day of Judgment) was about to come. He went to the mosque, stood up, and performed a prayer with long standing, bowing, and prostration. I have never seen him perform such a long standing, bowing, and prostration in any prayer. Then he delivered a sermon and said: "Indeed, these are signs which Allah sends. They do not appear because of anyone's death or life, but Allah sends them to instill fear in His servants. So when you see any of them, turn to the remembrance of Allah, supplicate to Him, and seek forgiveness from Him."

Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) performed two rak‘ahs in the prayer of the solar and lunar eclipse, which were like your prayer. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Sayyiduna Abu Bakrah’s (may Allah be pleased with him) statement that“two rak‘ahs like your prayer”means, as you people perform the eclipse prayer.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: During the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up to perform prayer; it seemed as if he would never go into bowing (ruku‘), then he went into ruku‘, and it seemed as if he would never raise his head, then he raised his head and began to weep and cry, and he was saying:“O my Lord, did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as I am among them? Did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as we seek forgiveness from You?”When the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) completed the prayer, the sun became bright again. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) stood up, praised and glorified Allah, and said:“Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. When these two are eclipsed, then turn towards the remembrance of Allah.”Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said:“Paradise was presented before me, so much so that if I wished, I could have taken a bunch from it. And Hell was presented before me, so much so that I tried to avoid it, fearing that it might engulf you. So I began to say: Did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as I am among them? O my Lord! Did You not promise me that You would not punish them as long as we seek forgiveness from You?”The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: I saw in it a black woman from Himyar who was the owner of a cat. She had tied up the cat and did not give it anything to eat or drink, nor did she let it go so that it could eat on its own. I saw that whenever she came, her face was scratched. I also saw in Hell a man from the tribe of Da‘d‘a‘ who was the caretaker of the Prophet’s sacrificial animals; he was being thrown into Hell with two sticks having two ends. I also saw a man with a staff; I saw him in Hell, leaning on his staff.

Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: A woman came to her and said: May Allah grant you salvation from the punishment of the grave. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) presented this to the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him): Will people be put to trial in the grave? The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: I seek refuge with Allah from this. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) went outside, and during that time, there was a solar eclipse, so we came towards the chamber, and the women gathered with us. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) came; this was at the time of forenoon. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) stood and performed the prayer; he stood for a long time, then he bowed, then he raised his head, then he stood again, but this standing was shorter than the previous one, then he bowed, and this bowing was shorter than the previous one, then he prostrated, then he stood up to perform the second rak'ah and performed it in the same manner, except that his bowing was shorter than the previous bowing, then he went into prostration, and during this, the sun became bright again. When the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) completed the prayer, he sat on the pulpit and during the sermon, he also said: "People will be put to such a trial in their graves which will be like the trial of the Dajjal." Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: After that, I always heard the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) seeking refuge from the punishment of the grave.

Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: During the sacred time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up to perform prayer. He recited a long surah, then he bowed (ruku) for as long as he had stood. Then he raised his head and began reciting another surah. When he finished reciting it, he bowed again for the second time. He then raised his head and went into prostration (sajdah). Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) stood up for the second rak'ah. In this, too, he recited a surah, but it was somewhat shorter than the first recitation. Then he bowed, but this bowing was shorter than the previous one. Then he went into prostration. When he raised his head from prostration, he said: "Whatever you have been promised, I have seen it while standing in this place. And I wished to take a bunch from Paradise—this happened when you saw me move forward. And I also saw Hell, parts of it consuming other parts—this happened when you saw me retreat. I saw in Hell Amr bin Luhayy, the one who started the practice of dedicating animals in the name of idols."

Hadith Number: 2845
Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: In the sacred time of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him), there was a solar eclipse. The Prophet (peace be upon him) led the people in prayer. He stood for a long time, then he bowed (ruku) and prolonged the bowing. Then he stood again and prolonged the standing, but it was less than the first standing. Then he bowed again and prolonged the bowing, but it was less than the first bowing. Then he raised his head and went into prostration (sajda). Then the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed the second rak'ah in the same manner as the first rak'ah. When the Prophet (peace be upon him) completed the prayer, the sun had become bright again. The Prophet (peace be upon him) praised Allah while addressing the people and then said: "Indeed, the sun and the moon are two signs among the signs of Allah. They do not eclipse because of anyone's death or life. When you see them, supplicate to Allah, proclaim His greatness, and give charity." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "O Ummah of Muhammad! By Allah! No one gets as angry as Allah does when His servant commits adultery or His maidservant commits adultery. O Ummah of Muhammad! By Allah! If you knew what I know, you would laugh little and weep much."
