Chapter on Leadership and Congregation - Section on the Virtue of Congregation - Allah records the prayer for one going to the mosque as long as he walks
Hadith Number: 2036
Abu Thamamah Hinnat reports: He met Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) when he was going to the mosque. The narrator says: He found me in such a state that I had interlocked my hands with each other. He made me separate my hands and forbade me from doing so. He mentioned this, that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When a person performs ablution, performs it well, and then sets out with the intention of going to the mosque, he should not interlock his hands with each other, because that person is considered to be in the state of prayer."

Sayyiduna Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Whoever goes to the mosque in the morning or in the evening, Allah prepares hospitality for him in Paradise every time he goes in the morning or in the evening."

Chapter on Leadership and Congregation - Section on the Virtue of Congregation - Allah records the one who leaves for prayer as among the worshippers until he returns home
Hadith Number: 2038
Sayyiduna Uqbah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "The person who waits for the prayer while sitting is like the one who is performing the prayer, and when the worshipper leaves his house, reward is recorded for him until he returns to his house." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narrator named Abu ‘Ashanah is Hiyy bin Abdullah Maghafi, and he is a trustworthy narrator from Egypt.

Chapter on Leadership and Congregation - Section on the Virtue of Congregation - Sins are erased and ranks raised with each step to prayer until returning home
Hadith Number: 2039
Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Whoever goes to the mosque near him for congregational prayer, then one of his two steps erases a sin and the other step records a good deed. This happens both when he goes and when he returns." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Among the Arabs, sometimes an action is attributed to the original matter. Just as they attribute it to the doer, similarly, sometimes the action is attributed to the act itself, just as it is attributed to the command. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) has informed that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) shaved his head at the time of the Farewell Hajj, meaning that the one who shaved (the barber) did so; it does not mean that the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did it himself. So here, the action is attributed to the command, just as it is attributed to the doer. Whereas, regarding the narration transmitted from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Amr (may Allah be pleased with him) which we have mentioned earlier, that one step erases a sin, here the action is attributed to the act itself. Because the step does not erase the existence of the sin, rather Allah Almighty bestows this favor upon the servant.

Chapter on Leadership and Congregation - Section on the Virtue of Congregation - Allah gives more reward to those whose homes are farther from the mosque
Hadith Number: 2040
Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There was a man, to my knowledge, among the people of Madinah, among those who faced the Qiblah and performed prayers, and who joined the congregation behind the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). Among them, no one's house was farther from the mosque than this man's house. It was said to him: If you buy a donkey on which you can ride and come (to the mosque) in the seasons of cold and heat, (it would be appropriate). He replied: I do not like that my house should be right next to the mosque. This matter was mentioned to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Allah will grant you all of this (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words): The reward you hope for, Allah will grant you that.

Sayyiduna Ubayy bin Ka'b (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: There was a man who, to my knowledge, was among those who performed prayer facing the Qiblah, and no one's house was farther from the mosque than his. Sayyiduna Ubayy (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I said to him, "You should buy a donkey so that you can ride it during dark nights or in the heat of summer; that would be appropriate." The narrator says: This matter reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). He asked that man about it, and he replied, "O Messenger of Allah! I wish that when I come to the mosque and when I return, both my coming and going be recorded (i.e., I receive the reward for both)." The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Allah the Exalted will grant you all that; all the reward you hope for, Allah the Exalted will grant you."

Sayyiduna Jabir bin Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with them both) narrates: We intended to move near the mosque because some space around the mosque had become vacant. When this news reached the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to our neighborhood and said: O Banu Salamah! It has reached me that you want to move near the mosque. They said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! We are quite far from the mosque and there is vacant space around the mosque. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: O Banu Salamah! Stay in your area, stay in your area, your steps will be recorded. Sayyiduna Jabir (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: After that, we did not wish to live near the mosque because the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) had said this.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "A man's prayer in congregation is twenty-five (25) degrees more virtuous than his prayer in his house or in his market. Its explanation is as follows: when a person performs ablution and performs it well, then he comes to the mosque with the sole intention of offering prayer, then for every step he takes, Allah Almighty raises his rank in return and forgives his sin because of it, until that person enters the mosque. When he enters the mosque, he is continuously counted as being in the state of prayer as long as he remains in the mosque for the sake of prayer."
