Sayyiduna Abu Darda’ (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):“When the sun rises, there are two angels on either side of it who make this announcement, and their voices are heard by all the earth except humans and jinn: O people! Come to your Lord. That which is little but sufficient is better than that which is abundant but distracts (from Allah). (The Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, says:) When the sun sets, two angels at its sides make this announcement: O Allah! Increase the wealth of the one who spends (in Your way), and cause loss to the one who withholds.”

Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Which one of you is such that he loves his own wealth more than the wealth of his heir?" The people replied: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! Each one of us loves his own wealth more than the wealth of his heir." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "You should see what you are saying." The people replied: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! This is what we think." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "For each one of you, the wealth of his heir is more beloved to him than his own wealth." The people asked: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him), how is that?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "The wealth of any one of you is that which he sends ahead (by giving in charity and good deeds), and the wealth of his heir is that which he leaves behind (after his death)."

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):“Those who possess abundance (of wealth and riches) in this world will be of the lowest rank (on the Day of Resurrection), except for the person who says about his wealth ‘in this way and in that way’ (i.e., spends it in charity and good causes), and he has earned it in a lawful manner.”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The example of the miser and the one who gives charity is like two men wearing two iron coats of armor or two iron breastplates, which cover them from their chests up to their necks. Whenever the charitable person gives charity and intends to do so, the armor moves away from his skin, until it covers the marks of his feet and comes down to the tips of his toes (i.e., it falls down). But whenever the miser intends to spend something and thinks about it, the armor becomes tighter and each ring of it gets fixed in its place. He tries to loosen it, but it does not become loose."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him):“At one of the gates of Paradise, an angel says: Who is the person who will give a loan today so that it may be repaid tomorrow? At another gate, an angel says: O Allah! Grant more to the one who spends (in Your way), and destroy the wealth of the one who does not spend.”

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him: "If a man gives one dirham in charity during his lifetime and while he is healthy, it is better for him than giving one hundred dirhams in charity when he is near death."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) and said: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Which charity is the greatest? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: That you give charity while you are healthy, fearing poverty and hoping for prosperity. Do not delay it so much that the soul reaches the throat, then you say: Give so much to so-and-so and so much to so-and-so, while it has already become theirs.

Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "The example of the person who gives charity when death approaches him is like the one who gives something after he himself is satisfied."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said to his companions one day: "Give charity." One man said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! I have one dinar." The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on yourself." He said: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on your wife." He said: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on your children." He said: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Spend it on your servant." He asked: "If I have another?" The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "You know best." (Meaning, you will know yourself on whom it should be spent.)

Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We used to carry loads on our backs (that is, we used to work as laborers), and then one of us would bring something and give it as charity. One person would bring half a sa’, another would bring a little more, so the hypocrites used to say: Allah is not in need of this person’s charity, and they used to say: This is just for show. So Allah the Exalted revealed this verse about them:“Those who criticize the believers who give charity willingly, and those who find nothing to give except what they earn through their hard work...”
