Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "There are three people whom Allah Almighty loves, and three people whom He dislikes. As for those whom Allah Almighty loves: one is the person who comes to some people and asks them for something in the name of Allah, not because of any kinship with them, then one of them turns back and secretly gives him something, such that no one knows about this gift except Allah Almighty and the one who gave it. The second are those people who travel throughout the night, until when they halt to rest, sleep is dearest to them, and they lay down to sleep, but one person stands up to seek My (i.e., Allah Almighty's) pleasure, recites My verses. And the third is the person who sets out on an expedition, faces the enemies, and when his companions retreat, he advances forward, and then either he is killed or Allah grants him victory. As for the three people whom Allah Almighty dislikes: one is an old adulterer, the second is a poor arrogant person, and the third is an oppressive wealthy person."

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): "There are three people whom Allah loves and three people whom Allah dislikes. Allah loves the person who is among some people, and a beggar comes to them and asks them in the name of Allah, not because of any kinship with them, but those people show miserliness (and do not give him anything). Then one person among them leaves them and goes to a place where no one but Allah sees him, and that person gives something to the beggar. The second is the person who is on an expedition, and the people scatter, so he says takbeer and plunges into the fight until Allah grants him victory or he is martyred. The third is the person who is traveling at night with some people, and when the night becomes deep, they camp at a place, and at that time sleep is dearest to them, so they sleep, and that person stands up and recites verses and supplicates in My presence. And Allah does not like an old adulterer, a miser, or an arrogant person." The narrator also mentioned the third person."

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The poor person is not the one who goes away with one or two dates or with one or two morsels. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates this statement of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): Once a man was present in a deserted place when he saw a cloud and heard a voice in it (that is, an angel commanded the cloud), "Water the garden of so-and-so." Then the cloud came there and rained on a rocky ground. The man says, when I reached that place, I saw some streams flowing from there, and one of the streams was filled with water, irrigating a certain place. I reached a man there who was standing and working in his garden with a shovel, irrigating it. I asked him, "O servant of Allah, what is your name?" He replied, "So-and-so." It was the same name that the man had heard in the cloud. The man asked, "O servant of Allah, why are you asking me my name?" He replied, "I heard in the cloud from which this water came, an angel saying, 'Water the garden of so-and-so,' and he mentioned your name. So tell me, what do you do in this garden?" He said, "Now that you have said this, I will tell you: whatever produce comes from it, I give one third of it in charity, spend one third on myself and my wife and children, and reinvest one third back into it."

He went out with his charity and (due to darkness and unawareness) placed it in the hand of an adulteress. The next day, people were talking among themselves that last night, charity was given to an adulteress. So the man said: O Allah! Praise is for You alone (even though my charity) reached an adulteress. I will certainly give charity again. Then the man went out with his charity and (due to darkness and unawareness) placed it in the hand of a thief. The next day, people were talking that last night, charity was given to a thief. So the man said: O Allah! Praise is for You alone (even though my charity) reached a thief. I will certainly give charity today as well. Then the man went out with his charity and placed it in the hand of a wealthy person. The next day, people were talking that last night, charity was given to a wealthy person. So the man said: O Allah! Praise is for You alone (even though my charity) reached a wealthy person. Then he was brought (before Allah Almighty), and it was told to him: As far as your charity is concerned, it has been accepted. The one given to the adulteress was accepted so that perhaps, because of receiving it, she may refrain from adultery; the one given to the thief was accepted so that perhaps, because of it, he may refrain from stealing; and the one given to the wealthy person was accepted so that he may take heed from it and spend from what Allah Almighty has given him."
