Ahnaf bin Qais narrates: I came to Madinah Munawwarah and was sitting in a gathering in which some individuals from the Quraysh were also present. During this, a man arrived who was wearing coarse clothes, his body was also coarse, and his face was coarse as well. He came and stood near those people and said: Give the collectors of treasures the news of burning coals, which are being kindled for them in the fire of Hell, and then one of those coals will be placed on the chest of one of them until it comes out from his shoulder, and it will be placed on his shoulder until it comes out from his chest. The people lowered their heads; I did not see anyone who replied to him. Then that man left, and I followed him. He went and sat near a pillar. I said: I have seen that all those people disliked what you said to them. That man said: These people have no understanding. My beloved friend, Sayyiduna Abu al-Qasim ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ), called me and said: O Abu Dharr! I said: I am present. The Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said: Have you seen Uhud? Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) says: I considered how intense the sunlight was, thinking perhaps the Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) wanted to send me for some task. The Prophet ( صلی اللہ علیہ وسلم ) said: I do not like that I should have gold equal to (the mountain of) Uhud and I spend all of it except for three dinars (i.e., I would spend even that). (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr al-Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) These people are gathering the world, they have no understanding of anything. The narrator says: I asked: What is your connection with your Qurayshi brothers? He replied: No, by your Lord! I will not ask these people for anything of the world, nor will I ask them about any matter of my religion, until I present myself before Allah Almighty and His Messenger

Ahnaf bin Qais says: I was sitting with some individuals of the Quraish when Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) passed by. He said: Inform the hoarders of wealth that their backs will be branded with that which comes out from their sides, and they will be branded with that which is placed towards their nape, so it will come out from the front. Then he moved aside and sat down. I asked: Who is this? The people replied: This is Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him). I got up and went to him and said: Just a little while ago I heard you narrate something, what is that? He replied: I have only narrated what I heard from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him). I asked: Then what do you say about this salary? He replied: You may take it, for now it is used to fulfill needs, but when it becomes the price of your religion, then leave it.

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "That wealth will come, for which its due (i.e., zakat) was not paid; the camel will trample its owner with its feet. Cows and goats will come and trample their owner with their feet and strike with their horns. The hoarded treasure will come in the form of a bald-headed snake and will go after its owner; its owner will run away from it, but it will appear before him again. Then he will run away from it and say: 'What do I have to do with you?' It will say: 'I am your treasure.' Then it will bite his hand."

Sayyiduna Talhah bin Ubaidullah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man from Najd came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), whose hair was disheveled. The buzzing of his voice could be heard, but it was not clear what he was saying. When he came near, it became known that he was inquiring about Islam. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Five prayers are obligatory in the day and night. He asked: Is there any prayer obligatory upon me besides this? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: No, except if you perform voluntary prayers (that is better). The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Fasting in the month of Ramadan is obligatory. He asked: Are there any other fasts obligatory upon me besides these? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: No, except if you keep voluntary fasts (that is better). The narrator states: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) mentioned Zakat to him, so he asked: Is there any other payment obligatory upon me besides this? The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: No, except if you give charity voluntarily (that is better). The narrator says: Then that man went away, saying: By Allah! I will not add anything to this nor will I decrease anything from it. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: If he has spoken the truth, then he has succeeded.

Sayyiduna Anas bin Malik (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: When Sayyiduna Abu Bakr Siddiq (may Allah be pleased with him) was appointed as Caliph, and he sent Sayyiduna Anas (may Allah be pleased with him) to Yemen, he sent him with this written letter:“In the name of Allah, seeking blessing, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful. This is the decree of the obligation of Zakat which the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) made obligatory upon the Muslims, about which Allah Almighty commanded His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him). Whoever among the Muslims is asked for it according to this, he will pay it, and whoever is asked for more than this, he will not pay it. For twenty-four (24) or fewer camels, for every five camels, one goat is obligatory. When their number reaches twenty-five (25) up to thirty-five, one bint makhad (a one-year-old she-camel) is obligatory. If there is no bint makhad, then one ibn labun (a two-year-old male camel) is obligatory. When their number is from thirty-six to forty-five, one bint labun (a two-year-old she-camel) is obligatory. When their number is from forty-six to sixty, one hiqqah (a three-year-old she-camel fit for mating) is obligatory. When their number is from sixty-one to seventy-five, one jadha’ah (a four-year-old she-camel) is obligatory. When their number is from seventy-six to ninety, two bint labun are obligatory. When their number is from ninety-one to one hundred and twenty, two hiqqah are obligatory, which can be given for mating. When their number exceeds one hundred and twenty, then for every forty, one bint labun, and for every fifty, one hiqqah is obligatory. Whoever has so many camels that a jadha’ah is obligatory as zakat, but he does not have a jadha’ah, rather he has a hiqqah, then a hiqqah will be taken from him, and he will give along with it two goats or twenty (20) dirhams. And whoever has so many camels that a hiqqah is obligatory, but he does not have a hiqqah, rather he has a jadha’ah, then a jadha’ah will be taken from him, and the zakat collector will give him either twenty (20) dirhams or two goats. And whoever has so many camels that a hiqqah is obligatory, but he does not have a hiqqah, rather he has a bint labun, then a bint labun will be taken from him, and he will give two goats or twenty (20) dirhams. And whoever has so many camels that a bint labun is obligatory as zakat, but he does not have it, rather he has a hiqqah, then a hiqqah will be taken from him, and the zakat collector will give him twenty (20) dirhams or two goats. Whoever has so many camels that their zakat is a bint labun, but he does not have a bint labun, then a bint makhad will be accepted from him, and he will give along with it twenty (20) dirhams or two goats. Whoever has so many camels that their zakat is a bint makhad, but he does not have it, rather he has a bint labun, then a bint labun will be accepted from him, and the zakat collector will give him twenty dirhams or two goats. Whoever does not have a bint makhad, but has a bint labun, then that will be taken from him, and nothing else will be taken along with it. Whoever has only four camels, then zakat is not obligatory on them, but if their owner wishes, he may give (something). If the number of camels is five, then one goat is obligatory. For grazing goats, from forty to one hundred and twenty, one goat is obligatory. When they are more than one hundred and twenty, up to two hundred, two goats are obligatory. If they are more than two hundred, up to three hundred, three goats are obligatory. If there are more than three hundred goats, then for every hundred, one goat is obligatory. In zakat, an old, one-eyed, or weak animal will not be taken, unless the zakat collector wishes to do so. (To avoid zakat) scattered wealth will not be gathered, nor will gathered wealth be scattered. And whatever wealth is jointly owned by two men, it will be collected from both on the basis of equality. And when someone’s grazing goats are less than forty, even if by one, then zakat is not obligatory, but if their owner wishes, he may give (something). For silver, a quarter of a tenth (i.e., two and a half percent) is obligatory. If the wealth is only one hundred and ninety, then zakat is not obligatory, but if its owner wishes, he may give it.”

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Zakat is not obligatory on less than five camels, zakat is not obligatory on less than five awqiyah (of silver), and zakat is not obligatory on less than five wasq (of grain)." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:): This narration explains that in Allah Almighty's statement, "Take zakat from their wealth in order to purify and cleanse them," what is meant is some of the wealth. Because the word 'wealth' also applies to that which is less than five camels, five awqiyah of silver, or five wasq of grain, but the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) has negated the obligation of zakat on less than this specified limit.
