Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: During the illness in which the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) passed away, he said: "Pour water over me from seven water-skins whose mouths have not been untied, so that I may be able to advise the people." Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We seated the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in the large tub of Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her). After that, we kept pouring water over him until he signaled to us that we had done so sufficiently.

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: We seated the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a tub made of brass belonging to Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her). We poured water over the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) until he began to gesture to us that you have done enough, then he proceeded towards the mosque.

Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates that when the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) became ill, he said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I said: "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stands in your place, due to weeping, he will not be able to make the people hear the recitation. Please order Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to lead the people in prayer." The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I repeated the same thing, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer." I said to Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her): "You say to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that when Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) stands in your place, due to weeping, he will not be able to make the people hear the recitation. Please order Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) to do so." Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) did so, and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Tell Abu Bakr to lead the people in prayer. You women are like those women in the story of Yusuf (peace be upon him)." Lady Hafsa (may Allah be pleased with her) said (to Lady Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her): "I have never seen any good coming from your side."

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) came out to lead the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had said the takbir, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) also came out. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to step back, but the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) gestured to him to stay in his place, so Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) remained in his place. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) came and sat beside him. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was following the prayer of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the people were following the prayer of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), until they completed the prayer.

Hadith Number: 6601
Ubaidullah bin Abdullah narrates: I went to the service of Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her). I said to her: Will you not tell me about the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? She said: Yes, the Prophet (peace be upon him) fell ill. He asked: Have the people performed the prayer? I replied: No. O Messenger of Allah, they are waiting for you. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: Place water for me in a large vessel. We did so, and the Prophet (peace be upon him) performed ghusl (ritual bath). Then, when he tried to get up, he fainted. When he regained consciousness, he asked: Have the people performed the prayer? We replied: No, O Messenger of Allah (peace be upon him)! They are waiting for you. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: At that time, the people were sitting in the mosque waiting for the Prophet (peace be upon him) for the Isha prayer. Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: The Prophet (peace be upon him) sent a person to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to tell him to lead the people in prayer. The messenger came to him and said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) commands you to lead the people in prayer. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), who was a soft-hearted and kind person, said: O Umar, you lead the people in prayer. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: You are more deserving of this. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did so. During those days, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to lead the people in prayer. Then, when the Prophet (peace be upon him) felt some improvement in his condition, he went out walking between two men. One of them was Abbas bin Abdul Muttalib (may Allah be pleased with him). At that time, Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was leading the people in prayer. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) saw the Prophet (peace be upon him), he began to step back, but the Prophet (peace be upon him) signaled to him not to step back. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said to those two men: Seat me beside Abu Bakr. So they seated the Prophet (peace be upon him) beside Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him).

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to pray following the prayer of the Prophet (peace be upon him), while Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was standing, and the people prayed following the prayer of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) was seated. The narrator named Ubaidullah says: I went to the service of Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both), and I said to him: Shall I not narrate to you the hadith that Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) told me about the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him)? He replied: Yes. So I narrated to him the hadith that Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) had narrated about the illness of the Prophet (peace be upon him). He did not deny any part of it, but he said: Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) did not mention to you the name of the other person who was with Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him). I replied: No. So Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: He was Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Lady Aisha Siddiqa (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: People say that the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) made a bequest regarding Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) (that after the Prophet, he would be the caliph), whereas the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked for a basin, he urinated in it. He was sitting leaning against my chest, then he slumped and passed away, and I did not even realize it.

Abu Tufail narrates: Sayyiduna Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) was asked: Did the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) grant you anything exclusively? He replied: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) did not grant us anything exclusively that he did not grant to other people generally, except for some things that are in the sheath of my sword. Then he took out a written scroll. (In which it was written:) "May Allah curse the one who sacrifices (an animal) in the name of other than Allah. May Allah curse the one who steals the boundary markers of the land. (That is, he tampers with them.) May Allah curse the one who curses his parents. May Allah curse the one who gives refuge to an innovator (in religion)."

(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) By 'of the land' is meant the marker that exists between the land of two people. This was stated by Imam Abu Hatim.

Urwah bin Zubair narrates: Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) informed him: The daughter of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), sent a message to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and demanded from him the inheritance of the Prophet (peace be upon him) which Allah Almighty had granted to the Prophet (peace be upon him) as fay (spoils of war) in Madinah, and what was granted in Fadak, and from what remained from the khums (one-fifth) of Khaybar (she demanded inheritance from that as well). So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: "Indeed, we (i.e., the Prophets) do not leave inheritance to be distributed; whatever we leave behind is charity. The family of Muhammad (peace be upon him) will eat from this wealth."
(Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) By Allah! I will not change anything regarding the charity of the Prophet (peace be upon him) from the way it was during the time of the Prophet (peace be upon him), and I will use it in the same way as the Prophet (peace be upon him) used to use it. Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) refused to give anything from it to Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). At this, Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) became upset with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and cut off relations with him. After the passing of the Prophet (peace be upon him), Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away after a few months. During this period, she did not speak to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). When she passed away, her husband Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) buried her at night. He did not inform Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) about this. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) himself led the funeral prayer for Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her). During the lifetime of Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her), people still maintained relations with Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), but when Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) passed away, people became distant from Ali (may Allah be pleased with him). So Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) expressed his intention to reconcile with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) and to pledge allegiance to him, even though during those months he had not pledged allegiance. He sent a message to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to come to them and that no one else should come with him. In fact, he did not like that Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) should also be present at that time. So Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): By Allah! You will not go to them alone. So Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: They will not do anything bad to me. By Allah! I will surely go to them. Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) went to them. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the testimony of faith and said: O Abu Bakr! We are aware of your virtue and of what Allah Almighty has granted you. We do not deny any good that Allah Almighty has given you, but you have been unjust to us in the matter of leadership. We think that due to our closeness to the Prophet (peace be upon him), we were more deserving of it. Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) continued to talk with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) until tears flowed from Abu Bakr’s (may Allah be pleased with him) eyes. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) began to speak, he said: "By Him in Whose hand is my soul, to maintain good relations with the relatives of the Prophet (peace be upon him) is more beloved to me than maintaining good relations with my own relatives and family. As for the matter of the wealth over which there has arisen a difference between me and you, I have not turned away from what is good regarding it, and I have done only what I saw the Prophet (peace be upon him) doing regarding it." So Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) said to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him): The promise for allegiance is for the evening. When Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) had performed the Zuhr prayer, he ascended the pulpit. He recited the testimony of faith, then mentioned the matter of Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) and his delay in pledging allegiance, and mentioned the excuse that Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) had presented to Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him). Then Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) recited a prayer for forgiveness (and ended his speech). Then Ali bin Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him) recited the testimony of faith. He declared the right and honor of Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) to be great and explained that what he had done was not out of anger with Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) or denial of the virtue that Allah Almighty had granted him, but in the matter of leadership, we thought that we should also have a share, so in this regard, we felt wronged. Therefore, there was some confusion in our minds. At this, the Muslims became happy. They said: You have spoken rightly. When Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) turned to enjoining good, the Muslims also drew close to Ali (may Allah be pleased with him).

Sayyiduna Malik bin Aws (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) sent me a message: Some people from the households of your tribe have come to Madinah. We have ordered some grants to be given to them; you should distribute them among them. I said: O Commander of the Faithful, please instruct someone else instead of me for this task. He said: O man, you take it into your possession. The narrator says: I was still sitting there when, in the meantime, Sayyiduna Umar’s (may Allah be pleased with him) servant Yarfa came and said: Sayyiduna Uthman, Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Awf, Sayyiduna Sa’d bin Abi Waqqas, and Sayyiduna Zubair bin Awwam (may Allah be pleased with them) have arrived. (The narrator says) I do not remember whether he mentioned Sayyiduna Talha (may Allah be pleased with him) or not. They are seeking permission to enter. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allow them to enter. The narrator says: After a short while, the servant came again and said: Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him) are seeking permission to enter. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Allow both of them to enter. When Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) entered, he said: O Commander of the Faithful, decide between me and this gentleman. These two gentlemen had a disagreement at that time regarding that property which Allah Almighty had granted to His Messenger as fay’ from the wealth of Banu Nadir. Those present said: O Commander of the Faithful, decide between these two gentlemen, and satisfy each of them regarding the other, for their dispute has become prolonged. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I ask you both by Allah, by whose command the heavens and the earth are established, do you know that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:“We do not leave inheritance; whatever we leave behind is charity.”
They said: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indeed said this. Then Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) repeated the same words to both of them, and they both replied: Yes. So Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: I will tell you about this fay’ property which Allah Almighty granted exclusively to His Prophet; He did not grant it to anyone except His Prophet. Allah Almighty said:“And whatever Allah has bestowed upon His Messenger as fay’, you did not spur your horses or camels for it.”So this was specific for the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). By Allah! The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not keep it for himself to the exclusion of you, nor did he show any favoritism regarding it among you. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed it among you, spread it among you, until only a small portion of this wealth remained. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would arrange a year’s sustenance for his family from it.
Sometimes the narrator named Mu’ammar has narrated these words: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) would set aside a year’s sustenance for his family from it, and whatever wealth remained, he would spend it in the way of Allah. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed away, Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) said: After the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I am the most entitled to follow the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this matter. I will do regarding it what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to do. Then Sayyiduna Umar turned to Sayyiduna Ali and Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: You both think that Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) was unjust and sinful in this matter, whereas Allah knows that he was truthful, righteous, and a follower of the truth. Then after Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him), I was made the guardian of it. This was during the two years of my rule. I also did regarding it what the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) used to do. You both thought that I was unjust and sinful in this matter, whereas Allah knows that I was truthful, righteous, and a follower of the truth in this matter. Then you both came to me. This gentleman, i.e., Sayyiduna Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him), came seeking the inheritance of his nephew, and this gentleman, i.e., Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), came and was demanding from me the inheritance of his wife. So I said to both of you: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“We do not leave inheritance; whatever we leave behind is charity.”
(Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said:) After that, I thought it appropriate to hand it over to both of you. I took from both of you an oath and a firm promise in the name of Allah that you would act regarding it as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did, as Sayyiduna Abu Bakr (may Allah be pleased with him) did, and as I did after becoming caliph. So both of you said: Hand it over to us on this condition. Now you are seeking another decision regarding it. By Him in whose command the heavens and the earth are established, I will not give any other decision between you regarding it. If you cannot take care of it, then return it to me.
The narrator says: After that, those lands came into the possession of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), then they remained in the hands of Sayyiduna Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), then in the hands of Sayyiduna Hasan bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with him), then in the hands of Sayyiduna Husayn bin Ali (may Allah be pleased with them both), then in the hands of Imam Zain al-Abidin (may Allah be pleased with him), then in the hands of Sayyiduna Hasan bin Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him), then in the possession of Sayyiduna Zaid bin Hasan.
The narrator named Mu’ammar has narrated these words: Then they remained in the hands of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Hasan (may Allah be pleased with him).
