Hazrat Urwah bin Zubair used to say that when Allah, the Glorious and Exalted, said: «﴿لَهُمُ الْبُشْرَى فِي الْحَيَاةِ الدُّنْيَا وَفِي الْآخِرَةِ﴾ [يونس: 64] » "For them are glad tidings in the life of this world and in the Hereafter," what is meant by this is good dreams which a person sees himself or which someone else sees for him.

It is narrated from Umm al-Mu'mineen Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that some people used to stay in her house. The Prophet (peace be upon him) heard that they had chess (or chaucer) with them, so he sent a message saying, "Remove the chess from my house, otherwise I will expel you from my house," and he considered it bad.

Yahya said: I heard from Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him: Playing chess is not good, there is no benefit or goodness in it, and he considered it disliked. And I heard from Imam Malik, may Allah have mercy on him: He used to say: Playing chess and all frivolous, useless games are disliked, and he used to recite this verse «﴿فَمَاذَا بَعْدَ الْحَقِّ إِلَّا الضَّلَالُ﴾ [يونس: 32] » "So what is there after the truth except misguidance?"

It is narrated from Muhammad bin Amr bin Ata (he says): I was sitting with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, when a man from Yemen came and said: "As-salamu Alaikum wa Rahmatullahi wa Barakatuh," and added something more to it. In those days, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, had lost his eyesight. He said: "Who is this?" The people said: "This is the same man from Yemen who comes to you," and they informed him until Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, recognized him. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, may Allah be pleased with them both, said: "The greeting ends at 'wa Barakatuh'; nothing should be added beyond this."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both) that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When the Jews greet you, they say 'As-Saam Alaikum' (i.e., death be upon you) instead of 'As-Salaam Alaikum.'
