Chapter: "What has been mentioned about the virtue of Ayat al-Kursi"
Hadith Number: 8520
It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abi (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked me: Which verse in the Book of Allah is the greatest in magnificence? I said: Allah and His Messenger know best, but you repeated this question several times. Eventually, I said: It is Ayat al-Kursi. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Mundhir! May your knowledge be blessed for you. By the One in Whose hand is my soul! This verse has a tongue and two lips; it glorifies Allah, the King, near the foot of the Throne.

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Ayyub Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him), he says: I was on a platform in my house, a jinn would come and take (goods, etc.). I complained about this to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: When you see him, say: "In the name of Allah! Accept the word of the Messenger of Allah." When he came, I said this to him and caught him. He said: I will not return now. So I let him go. I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and he (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What happened to the prisoner? I said: I had caught him, but when he promised not to come again, I let him go. He (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He will return. When he came again, I caught him and let him go two or three times; each time he would say that he would not return, and whenever I went to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), he (peace and blessings be upon him) would say: What did the prisoner do? I said: I catch him, and he says he will not return, so I let him go. He (peace and blessings be upon him) again said: Watch, he will return. Indeed, he came, and I caught him. This time he said: Let me go, I will teach you something by which nothing will come near you. That is Ayat al-Kursi. When I came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and told him this, he (peace and blessings be upon him) said: He is a great liar, but he has spoken the truth to you.

Syedna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: We are more deserving of doubt than Prophet Ibrahim (peace be upon him), when he said: {رَبِّ اَرِنِیْ کَیْفَ تُحْيِ الْمَوْتٰی قَالَ اَوَلَمْ تُؤْمِنْ قَالَ بَلٰی وَ لَکِنْ لِیَطْمَئِنَّ قَلْبِیْ} And when Ibrahim said: "My Lord! Show me how You give life to the dead." He said: "Do you not believe?" He said: "Yes, but (I ask) in order that my heart may be at ease."

Chapter: "To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and whether you disclose what is in yourselves or conceal it..."
Hadith Number: 8523
عن ابي هريرة قال: لما نزل على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: {لله ما في السماوات وما في الارض وإن تبدوا ما في انفسكم او تخفوه يحاسبكم به الله، فيغفر لمن يشاء ويعذب من يشاء والله على كل شيء قدير} فاشتد ذلك على صحابة رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم فاتوا رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم ثم جثوا على الركب، فقالوا: يا رسول الله! كلفنا من الاعمال ما نطيق الصلاة والصيام والجهاد والصدقة، وقد انزل عليك هذه الآية ولا نطيقها، فقال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وآله وسلم: ((اتريدون ان تقولوا كما قال اهل الكتابين من قبلكم سمعنا وعصينا، بل قولوا سمعنا واطعنا غفرانك ربنا وإليك المصير)) فقالوا: سمعنا واطعنا غفرانك ربنا وإليك المصير، فلما اقر بها القوم وذلت بها السنتهم انزل الله عز وجل في إثرها: {آمن الرسول بما انزل إليه من ربه والمؤمنون، كل آمن بالله وملائكته وكتبه ورسله لا نفرق بين احد من رسله} قال عفان: قراها سلام ابو المنذر يفرق {وقالوا سمعنا واطعنا غفرانك ربنا وإليك المصير} فلما فعلوا ذلك نسخها الله تبارك وتعالى بقوله: {لا يكلف الله نفسا إلا وسعها لها ما كسبت وعليها ما اكتسبت} فصار لها ما كسبت من خير وعليها ما اكتسبت من شر، فسر العلاء هذا {ربنا لا تؤاخذنا إن نسينا او اخطانا} قال: نعم، {ربنا ولا تحمل علينا إصرا كما حملته على الذين من قبلنا} قال: نعم، {ربنا ولا تحملنا ما لا طاقة لنا به} قال: نعم، {واعف عنا واغفر لنا وارحمنا انت مولانا فانصرنا على القوم الكافرين}
. Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that when this verse was revealed to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) {لِلَّہِ مَا فِی السَّمَوَاتِ وَمَا فِی الْأَ رْضِ وَإِنْ تُبْدُوا مَا فِی أَ نْفُسِکُمْ أَ وْ تُخْفُوہُ یُحَاسِبْکُمْ بِہِ اللّٰہُ، فَیَغْفِرُ لِمَنْ یَشَائُ وَیُعَذِّبُ مَنْ یَشَائُ وَاللّٰہُ عَلَی کُلِّ شَیْء ٍ قَدِیرٌ} … To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth. And whether you disclose what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Then He will forgive whom He wills and punish whom He wills, and Allah is Powerful over everything. This verse was very hard on the Companions, so they came to the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), sat down on their knees, and said: O Messenger of Allah! In this verse, we have been made responsible for those deeds which we have the strength to do—prayer, fasting, jihad, charity (we can perform these deeds)—but now the verse that has been revealed to you, we do not have the strength for it. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Do you want to say what the People of the Book before you said:“We heard and we disobeyed”? Rather, say:“We heard and we obeyed. O our Lord! We seek Your forgiveness and to You is the return.”The Companions said:“We heard and we obeyed. O our Lord! We seek Your forgiveness and to You is the return.”When the people acknowledged this and their tongues humbled themselves before this command, then after that Allah the Exalted said: {آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَیْہِ مِنْ رَبِّہِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ، کُلٌّ آمَنَ بِاللّٰہِ وَمَلَائِکَتِہِ وَکُتُبِہِ وَرُسُلِہِ لَا نُفَرِّقُ بَیْنَ أَ حَدٍ مِنْ رُسُلِہِ} ‘Affan said: Abu Munzir Salam recited“yufarriqu,”{وَقَالُوْا سَمِعْنَا وَأَ طَعْنَا غُفْرَانَکَ رَبَّنَا وَإِلَیْکَ الْمَصِیرُ} When the Companions did so, Allah the Exalted abrogated the command of this verse with this statement: {لَا یُکَلِّفُ اللّٰہُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَہَا لَہَا مَا کَسَبَتْ وَعَلَیْہَا مَا اکْتَسَبَتْ} For the soul is what it earns of good, and against it is what it commits of evil. { رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَا إِنْ نَسِینَا أَ وْ أَ خْطَأْنَا} Allah the Exalted said: Yes {رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَیْنَا إِصْرًا کَمَا حَمَلْتَہُ عَلَی الَّذِینَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا} Allah the Exalted said: Yes {رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَۃَ لَنَا بِہِ} Allah the Exalted said: Yes, {وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْ لَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا أَ نْتَ مَوْلَانَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَی الْقَوْمِ الْکَافِرِینَ۔}

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Abdullah ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) that when this verse was revealed {لِلّٰہِ مَا فِی السَّمٰوَاتِ وَمَا فِی الْأَ رْضِ وَإِنْ تُبْدُوا مَا فِی أَ نْفُسِکُمْ أَ وْ تُخْفُوہُ یُحَاسِبْکُمْ بِہِ اللّٰہُ … } … To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and whether you disclose what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. So a thought entered the hearts of the Companions and they became grieved, but the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say, "We have heard and we have obeyed," or "We have submitted." So Allah Almighty placed faith in their hearts, and meanwhile these verses were revealed: {اٰمَنَ الرَّسُوْلُ بِمَآ اُنْزِلَ اِلَیْہِ مِنْ رَّبِّہٖ وَالْمُؤْمِنُوْنَ کُلٌّ اٰمَنَ بِاللّٰہِ وَمَلٰیِکَتِہٖ وَکُتُبِہٖ وَرُسُلِہٖ لَانُفَرِّقُ بَیْنَ اَحَدٍ مِّنْ رُّسُلِہٖ وَقَالُوْا سَمِعْنَا وَاَطَعْنَاغُفْرَانَکَ رَبَّنَا وَاِلَیْکَ الْمَصِیْرُ۔لَا یُکَلِّفُ اللّٰہُ نَفْسًا اِلَّا وُسْعَہَا لَہَا مَا کَسَبَتْ وَعَلَیْہَا مَا اکْتَسَبَتْ رَبَّنَا لَا تُؤَاخِذْنَآ اِنْ نَّسِیْنَآ اَوْ اَخْطَاْنَا رَبَّنَا وَلَا تَحْمِلْ عَلَیْنَآ اِصْرًا کَمَا حَمَلْتَہ عَلَی الَّذِیْنَ مِنْ قَبْلِنَا رَبَّنَا وَلَا تُحَمِّلْنَا مَا لَا طَاقَۃَ لَنَا بِہٖ وَاعْفُ عَنَّا وَاغْفِرْلَنَا وَارْحَمْنَا اَنْتَ مَوْلٰینَا فَانْصُرْنَا عَلَی الْقَوْمِ الْکٰفِرِیْنَ۔}

Mujahid says: I entered upon Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) and said: O Abu Abbas! I was with Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with them both), he recited this verse and began to weep. He asked: Which verse? I said: This verse {لِلّٰہِ مَا فِی السَّمٰوَاتِ وَمَا فِی الْأَ رْضِ وَإِنْ تُبْدُوا مَا فِی أَنْفُسِکُمْ أَوْ تُخْفُوہُ یُحَاسِبْکُمْ بِہِ اللّٰہُ … } … To Allah belongs whatever is in the heavens and whatever is in the earth, and whether you disclose what is in your hearts or conceal it, Allah will call you to account for it. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) said: When this verse was revealed, the Companions were greatly distressed and said: O Messenger of Allah! We have been destroyed, if we are taken to account for our words and deeds (that is understandable), but our hearts are not under our control. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say: We have heard and we obey. Then this verse abrogated the ruling of that verse {آمَنَ الرَّسُولُ بِمَا أُنْزِلَ إِلَیْہِ مِنْ رَبِّہِ وَالْمُؤْمِنُونَ … … لَا یُکَلِّفُ اللّٰہُ نَفْسًا إِلَّا وُسْعَہَا لَہَا مَا کَسَبَتْ وَعَلَیْہَا مَا اکْتَسَبَتْ} thus the thoughts of the soul were forgiven and accountability was kept for actions.

It is narrated from Umayyah that he asked Sayyida Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) about these verses: {إِنْ تُبْدُوْا مَا فِی أَنْفُسِکُمْ أَ وْ تُخْفُوْہُ یُحَاسِبْکُمْ بِہِ اللّٰہُ} and {مَنْ یَعْمَلْ سُوئً ا یُجْزَ بِہِ} (Whoever does an evil deed will be recompensed for it). Sayyida (may Allah be pleased with her) said: Since the time I asked the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) about them, no one has asked me about them until now. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to me: O Aisha! Allah continues to hold the servant accountable through those afflictions that keep befalling the servant, such as: fever occurs, calamity comes, a thorn pricks, even to the extent that the item which the servant keeps in his sleeve, then becomes distressed upon not finding it, and then finds it in his own side or armpit. (This series of illnesses and troubles continues) until the believer becomes purified from his sins just as a red gold nugget becomes pure after coming out of the furnace.
