Yahya bin Ya’mar narrates: I and Humaid bin Abdur Rahman Himyari set out for Hajj, or perhaps for Umrah. We thought: Maybe we will meet someone from the companions of the Prophet (peace be upon him), so we can ask them about Qadar (predestination). Then we met Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). I realized that my companion would want me to begin the conversation. We said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! There are some people among us who recite the Qur’an and seek knowledge, but they believe that Qadar has no reality, and that matters begin anew (without any prior decree). Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: If you meet those people, tell them that I have nothing to do with them, and they have nothing to do with me. By the One in whose name Abdullah bin Umar swears, if any one of them were to spend gold equal to Mount Uhud and does not believe in Qadar, his action would not be accepted. Then Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) told me this, he narrates: One day the Prophet (peace be upon him) was sitting. Meanwhile, a man came whose beard was extremely black and whose clothes were extremely white. He placed his knee next to the knee of the Prophet (peace be upon him) and said: O Muhammad (peace be upon him)! What is Islam? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: To testify that there is no god but Allah, to establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and to perform Hajj to the House of Allah. The man said: You have spoken the truth. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were amazed at him asking the Prophet (peace be upon him) and then confirming his answer. The man said: Tell me, what is Iman (faith)? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: It is to believe in Allah, His angels, His books, His messengers, resurrection after death, and to believe in Qadar, its good and its bad, its sweetness and its bitterness. The man said: You have spoken the truth. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: We were amazed at him asking the Prophet (peace be upon him) and then confirming his answer. The man said: Tell me, what is Ihsan? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: It is to worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then (know that) He sees you. The man said: Tell me, when is the Hour (Day of Judgment)? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: The one being asked knows no more about it than the one asking. The man asked: What are its signs? The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: That a slave woman will give birth to her master. That you will see barefoot, naked, destitute shepherds competing in constructing tall buildings. The narrator says: Then the man turned and left. Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) says: Three days later, I met the Prophet (peace be upon him), and the Prophet (peace be upon him) asked: O Umar! Do you know who that man was? I said: No. The Prophet (peace be upon him) said: That was Jibreel (Gabriel), he came to teach you your religion.

Zaid bin Wahib narrates: I bear witness that I heard Sayyiduna Abu Dharr Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) saying this at the place of Rabdhah. Once, I was walking on the rocky ground of Madinah Munawwarah with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him). The mountain of "Uhud" came before us. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! I do not like that I should have gold equal to the mountain of Uhud, and then by the evening, even a single dinar from it remains with me, except that which I have kept for the repayment of a debt. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) continued walking, and I also continued walking with him. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! I said: O Messenger of Allah! I am present. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: (In terms of wealth and riches in this world) those who have abundance will be the ones with little (reward) on the Day of Resurrection. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: O Abu Dharr! Stay here until I come to you. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) went away until he disappeared from sight. Then I heard a voice. I thought of going forward, but then I remembered the command of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) which he had given me, so I remained there until the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) returned. I said: O Messenger of Allah! I heard a voice. At first, I intended to come to you, but then I remembered your command which you had given me. So the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: That was Jibreel (peace be upon him) who came to me and informed me that whoever from my Ummah dies in such a state that he does not associate anyone with Allah, then that person will enter Paradise. (Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, may Allah be pleased with him, says) I said: O Messenger of Allah! Even if he has committed adultery, and even if he has stolen? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Even if he has committed adultery, even if he has stolen.

This same narration is also transmitted with another chain from Sayyiduna Abu Darda (may Allah be pleased with him).

Abu Jamrah narrates: I used to perform the duties of interpreter between Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) and the people. (That is, when Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) was the governor, I was his secretary.) Once, a woman came to him; she wanted to ask about the nabidh (fermented drink) made in a pitcher. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) said: A delegation from the tribe of Abdul Qais came to the service of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him). The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: Which delegation is this, and which tribe are you from? They replied: We belong to the tribe of Rabi’ah. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Welcome to this tribe (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words), this delegation for whom there is no disgrace or regret. They said: O Messenger of Allah! We have come to you from a distant region. Between us and you is the tribe of Mudar, who are disbelievers. Therefore, we can only come to you during the sacred months. Please command us with something that we can convey to those behind us, and by which we may enter Paradise. Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) commanded them with four things and forbade them from four things. He commanded them to have“faith only in Allah the Exalted.”He said: Do you know what it means to have“faith only in Allah the Exalted”? They replied: Allah and His Messenger know best. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: It is to testify that there is no god but Allah, and indeed Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is the Messenger of Allah. (Further commands are:) To establish prayer, to give zakat, to fast in Ramadan, and that you pay the khums (one-fifth) from the spoils of war. (Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas (may Allah be pleased with them both) says:) The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) forbade them from (using) dubba’, hantam, muzaffat, and naqir (for making drinks). Here, the narrator named Shu’bah sometimes narrates the word naqir and sometimes the word maqir. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Memorize these things and inform those behind you about them.

Yahya bin Ya’mar says: I said: O Abu Abdur Rahman! (that is, he said this to Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him:) There are some people who believe that there is no reality to destiny. So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, inquired: Is there anyone among us from those people? He replied: No. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar, may Allah be pleased with him, said: When you meet those people, convey this message from me to them that Abdullah bin Umar declares himself free from you before Allah. And you have nothing to do with him. Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, narrated this to us. Once we were sitting with the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, along with some people. During this, a man came upon whom there were no signs of travel, and he was not a resident of the city either. He came forward, stepping over people’s necks, and sat in front of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him. He said: O Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon you! What is Islam? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Islam is that you bear witness that there is no god but Allah, and indeed Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, is the Messenger of Allah; you establish prayer, you pay zakat, you perform Hajj and Umrah, you perform ghusl for major impurity, you complete ablution, and you fast in Ramadan. He asked: If I do this, am I a Muslim? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes. He said: You have spoken the truth. He said: O Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon you! What is Iman (faith)? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: That you believe in Allah, His angels, His books, and His messengers. You believe in Paradise, Hell, and the Scale. You believe in resurrection after death. You believe in destiny, whether good or bad. The man asked: If I do this, am I a believer? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. He asked: O Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon you! What is Ihsan (excellence)? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Ihsan is that you worship Allah as if you see Him, and if you do not see Him, then He surely sees you. He asked: If I do this, will I be considered a doer of Ihsan? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Yes! He said: You have spoken the truth. He asked: O Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon you! When will the Hour (Day of Judgment) come? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Glory be to Allah! The one being asked does not know more about it than the one asking. If you wish, I can tell you about its signs. He said: Okay. So the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said:“When you see the poor, barefoot, and scantily clad people competing in constructing tall buildings and they become kings.”He asked: Who are meant by the barefoot and scantily clad people? The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: The ‘Arib (i.e., the lower class Arabs). The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: When you see a slave girl giving birth to her mistress, then this will be one of the signs of the Hour. He said: You have spoken the truth. Then he went back. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Bring that man to me. (The narrator says) We searched for him everywhere but could not find him. The Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him, said: Do you know who he was? He was Jibreel (Gabriel), peace be upon him, who came to you to teach you your religion, so take from him. By the One in Whose hand is my soul, never before this time did I have difficulty recognizing him, but this time I recognized him only when he went back. Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says: The narrator named Sulaiman Taimi is unique in narrating these words:“So take from him.”And also these words:“And that you perform Umrah, and you perform ghusl, and you complete ablution.”

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to fight against them until they acknowledge that there is no deity except Allah. When they testify that there is no deity except Allah, and believe in what I have brought, then they will protect their lives and wealth from me, except for the right of Islam, and their reckoning will be with Allah the Exalted."

In narrating this tradition, the narrator named Darawardi is unique. This has been stated by the Shaykh.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "I have been commanded to fight the people until they testify that there is no deity except Allah, and that I am the Messenger of Allah, and they establish prayer and pay zakat. When they do this, they will have protected their lives and their wealth from me, except for the right of Islam, and their reckoning is with Allah the Exalted." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) In narrating this tradition, the narrator named Shu’bah is unique, and in this narration there is a clear statement that faith has components and branches, which differ according to the conditions of the people being addressed, because the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned this in the narration: "Until they testify that there is no deity except Allah, and indeed I am the Messenger of Allah." So in this there is an indication that this is the branch which is obligatory upon all those addressed in all circumstances. Then he said, "and they establish prayer," so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that which is obligatory upon those addressed in some circumstances. Then he said, "and they pay zakat," so the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned that which is obligatory upon those addressed in some circumstances. So this indicates that all good deeds which resemble these three things, which you mentioned in this narration, are all part of faith.

Sayyiduna Abu Umamah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: A man asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is meant by faith?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When your good deeds please you and your bad deeds displease you, then you are a believer." He asked, "O Messenger of Allah! What is sin?" The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When something pricks your heart, then leave it."

Ata bin Yasar, who is the judge of Madinah Munawwarah, narrates: I heard Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) saying, the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Soon after me there will come rulers who will say things which they do not do, and they will do things which they have not been commanded to do. So whoever strives against them with his hand, he is a believer; and whoever strives against them with his tongue, he is a believer; and whoever strives against them with his heart, he is a believer. After that, there will be no faith. The narrator named Ata says: When I heard this hadith from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), I took this narration to Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) and informed him about it. He asked: Did you yourself hear Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrate this? Ata says: I said: He is ill. What is the reason that you do not go to visit him? So Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said: Take us to him. When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) went there, I also went with him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) inquired about his illness, then asked him about this hadith. The narrator says: When Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) left from there, he was rubbing his palm and saying: Ibn Umm Abd (i.e., Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud, may Allah be pleased with him) cannot attribute a false statement to the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him).
