Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates that the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "The angels of the night and the angels of the day come to you in succession. They gather together at the Fajr and Asr prayers. Then those angels who have spent the night among you ascend (to the heavens). Their Lord asks them, although He knows best about them, 'In what condition did you leave My servants?' They reply: 'We left them while they were praying, and when we came to them, they were also praying.'"

Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, narrates this statement of the Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him: "The angels of the night and the day come among you in succession. They gather at the Fajr and Asr prayers. Then those angels who spent the night among you ascend, and (Allah Almighty) asks them, although He knows best, 'In what condition did you leave My servants?' They reply: 'We left them while they were performing prayer, and when we came to them, they were also performing prayer.'"

Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says: "In this hadith, there is a clear statement that the angels of the night descend when people are performing the Asr prayer, and at the same time, the angels of the day ascend. This is contrary to the view of the one who claims that the angels descend after the sun has set."

Sayyiduna Fadala bin Abdullah Laithi رضي الله عنه narrates: I presented myself before the Prophet Muhammad صلى الله عليه وسلم. I accepted Islam and the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم taught me to perform the five prayers at their specific times. The narrator states: I asked him, "These are the times when I am occupied. Please command me regarding something comprehensive." The narrator states that the Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "If you are occupied, then do not be negligent regarding the two Asr prayers." The narrator says: I asked, "Which are the two Asr prayers?" The Prophet صلى الله عليه وسلم said: "The Fajr prayer and the Asr prayer."

Abdullah bin Fadalah narrates from his father: The Messenger of Allah taught us, and among what he taught us was also the explanation of what is meant by the two Asr prayers. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: The prayer before the rising of the sun and the prayer before its setting. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) Dawood bin Abi Hind heard this narration from Abu Harb bin Abu Aswad and Abdullah bin Fadalah; he has transmitted the wording of both narrations, and both of its chains are preserved. The Arabs, in their language, mention things based on their quantity or abundance; they use the word "before" for a small thing, a long period, or a great duration. For example, regarding the signs of the Hour, the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said that before the Hour, such and such tribulations will occur, even though these tribulations will be many years before (the Hour). This indicates that the word "before" is used for the meaning we have mentioned; it is not that the word "before" in the language is used to mean something being immediately adjacent. To the extent that (it would be ruled) that the morning prayer can only be performed just before the sun rises, and the Asr prayer just before the sun sets, while in this matter, the meaning of "before" in its entirety is intended.

Sayyiduna Abu Basrah Ghifari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) led us in the ‘Asr prayer and said:“Indeed, this prayer was also presented to the people before you, but they were negligent regarding it and abandoned it. Whoever among them performed this prayer was given double the reward for it, and after this prayer, no prayer is to be performed until the ‘Shahid’ (star) appears.”The narrator says: By ‘Shahid’ is meant a star. (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The Arabs call the star ‘Thurayya’, but by this statement, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not mean that the time for Maghrib does not begin until ‘Thurayya’ (the star) appears. The reason is that Thurayya appears when the horizon has become dark and the ether has changed. In my view, its meaning is that the first star to appear among the subordinate stars of Thurayya is ‘Shahid’. The subordinate stars of Thurayya are: Kaf Khadhib, Kaf Jazma’, Mabid, Ma’sim, Mirfaq, Ibrah Mirfaq, ‘Ayyuq, Rajul ‘Ayyuq, A’lam, Dhiqah, Qilas. Among these, except for ‘Ayyuq, none of the stars are bright; only it (‘Ayyuq) is a red and bright star, which appears uniquely on the body of Thurayya towards the north. And it appears at sunset. When a person’s eyesight is slightly sharp, he can see ‘Ayyuq at sunset. This is the star upon whose appearance it becomes permissible to perform the Maghrib prayer (i.e., the time for this prayer begins).
