Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We did not know what to recite in prayer. We used to recite: Peace be upon Allah, peace be upon Sayyiduna Jibreel, peace be upon Sayyiduna Mika'il. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) taught us. He said: Indeed, Allah Himself is the Giver of Peace. When you sit after performing two rak'ahs, recite this: "All verbal, physical, and financial acts of worship are exclusively for Allah. O Prophet, peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah." Abu Wa'il, the narrator, in his narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), also transmitted these words from the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him): "When you recite this, your greeting (Islam) will reach every righteous servant in the heavens and the earth." Abu Ishaq, another narrator, in his narration from Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him), transmitted these words: "When you recite them, your greeting (Islam) will reach every close servant and sent Prophet (the narrator is unsure, perhaps these are the words:) righteous servant." (Then recite this:) "I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger."

Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: We said, O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We have come to know how to send peace upon you, but how should we send blessings (salat) upon you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: You should say: "O Allah! Send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. And send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious."

Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us while we were sitting in the gathering of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah. Then Sayyiduna Bashir bin Sa’d (may Allah be pleased with him) submitted: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! Allah Almighty has commanded us to send blessings upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you? The narrator says: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) remained silent until we wished that he had not asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) this question. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: You should say:“O Allah! Send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim. And send blessings upon Muhammad and upon the family of Muhammad, as You sent blessings upon Ibrahim and upon the family of Ibrahim among all the worlds. Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious.”(The Prophet, peace and blessings of Allah be upon him, said:) The method of greeting (salam) is as you already know.

Imam Ibn Khuzaymah narrated this tradition with his chain from the narrator named Ibn Ishaq. He says that he narrated to me about sending blessings upon the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) during prayer. Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud narrates: A man came and sat in front of the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him). At that time, we were present with him. That man said: As for sending peace upon you, we have come to know about it. When we are praying, how should we send blessings upon you? May Allah send blessings upon you. The narrator says: The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) remained silent until we wished that the man had not asked you this question. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) said: When you begin to send blessings upon me, then recite this:“O Allah! Send blessings upon the unlettered Prophet, our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), and upon the family of our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), as You sent blessings upon our master Ibrahim (peace be upon him) and upon the family of our master Ibrahim (peace be upon him). And send blessings upon the unlettered Prophet, our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), and upon the family of our master Muhammad (peace be upon him), as You sent blessings upon our master Ibrahim and upon the family of our master Ibrahim. Surely, You are Praiseworthy and Glorious.”

Sayyiduna Fadala bin Ubaid (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) heard a man supplicating during prayer: he had neither praised Allah Almighty nor sent blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him). So the Prophet (peace be upon him) said: This person has acted hastily. Then he called him and said: When any one of you performs prayer (or begins to supplicate), he should first praise and glorify Allah Almighty, then send blessings upon the Prophet (peace be upon him). After that, he may supplicate for whatever he wishes.

Qasim bin Mughira narrates: Alqama held my hand and narrated this hadith to me, Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) had held his hand and narrated this. The Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) held the hand of Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) and taught him the words of Tashahhud during prayer (which are as follows):“All verbal, physical, and financial acts of worship are exclusively for Allah. O Prophet! Peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah be upon you. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah.”The narrator named Zuhair stated: When I noted this hadith from Hasan, I remembered this part, then Zuhair narrated the remaining words of the narration from Hasan from his memory, which are as follows:“I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is His servant and His Messenger.”The narrator named Zuhair says: Then I referred to my memory in which the words of the narration are:“When you have recited this, you have completed your prayer. If you wish to stand up, then stand up; if you wish to remain seated, then remain seated.”

Hasan bin Harq narrates from Qasim bin Mukhaimirah. Alqamah took my hand (he reported), Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) had taken Alqamah’s hand, and the Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) had taken Abdullah bin Mas’ud’s (may Allah be pleased with him) hand and taught him the words of Tashahhud (which are as follows):“All verbal, physical, and financial acts of worship are exclusively for Allah. O Prophet! Peace be upon you, and the mercy and blessings of Allah. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad is the servant of Allah and His Messenger.”Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: When you finish reciting this, you have completed your prayer. If you wish, remain seated, and if you wish, you may stand up.

Qasim bin Mukhaymarah narrates: Alqamah bin Qais held my hand. He narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) held my hand. He narrates: The Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) held my hand and taught me the words of Tashahhud (which are as follows): "All verbal, physical, and financial acts of worship are exclusively for Allah. O Prophet (peace be upon you), may Allah's peace, mercy, and blessings descend upon you. Peace be upon us and upon all the righteous servants of Allah. I bear witness that there is no deity except Allah, and I bear witness that Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) is His servant and His Messenger." Hasan bin Harnami is the narrator who reported this. Muhammad bin Hibban, with the same chain, has also narrated this hadith, in which these additional words are mentioned: "When you have recited this, then if you wish, you may stand up." (Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narrator named Muhammad bin Aban is weak. We have already mentioned our disassociation from him in the book "al-Majruhin."

Abdur Rahman bin Abi Laila narrates: Sayyiduna Ka'b bin Ujrah (may Allah be pleased with him) said to me: Shall I not give you a gift? We said: Yes. He said: I asked: O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)! We have come to know how to send peace upon you, so how should we send blessings upon you? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: Say: "O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious. O Allah, send blessings upon Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) and upon the family of Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him), as You sent blessings upon the family of Ibrahim (peace be upon him). Surely, You are Praiseworthy, Glorious."

Sayyiduna Abu Mas’ud Ansari (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) came to us while we were present in the gathering of Sayyiduna Sa’d bin ‘Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him).
