Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: His wife complained to him about some need, so he set out with the intention of going to the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so that he could ask the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for something for his family. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) was present on the pulpit at that time and was saying: "O people! A time has come upon you that you should become independent of asking. Indeed, whoever tries to avoid (asking), Allah the Exalted keeps him safe; whoever seeks prosperity, Allah the Exalted grants him prosperity. By the One in Whose hand is the life of Muhammad (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), no servant has been given anything more spacious than patience. If you insist on asking, then whatever I have, I will give it to you."

Sayyiduna Abu Sa'id Khudri (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Some of the Ansar asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for something, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave it to them. They asked him again, and he gave it to them again, until whatever wealth he had was finished. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: Whatever good I have, I will not withhold it from you, but whoever tries to avoid asking, Allah will keep him from asking, and whoever tries to be self-sufficient, Allah will make him self-sufficient, and whoever wants to be patient, Allah will grant him patience. And no one has been given anything better and more expansive than patience.

Sayyiduna Muawiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) stated this on the pulpit of Damascus: Beware, be cautious regarding the hadiths of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and also about that hadith which occurred during the era of Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him), because he used to instill fear of Allah in people. He narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "When Allah intends good for a person, He grants him understanding of the religion." And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say, "I am a treasurer; if I give something to someone with my pleasure, then there will be blessing in it for that person. And if I give something to someone because of his asking or because of his greed, then his example is like that of a person who eats but is never satisfied."

Sayyiduna Hakim bin Hizam (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I asked the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) for something, and the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) gave it to me. I asked again, and he gave it to me again. This happened three times. Then the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "O Hakim, this wealth is sweet and lush. Whoever acquires it with generosity of the soul, it is blessed for him. And whoever acquires it with greed of the soul, there is no blessing in it for him, and he is like the one who eats but is never satisfied. The upper hand is better than the lower hand." Sayyiduna Hakim (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I said, "O Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him)! By the One Who has sent you with the truth, I will never ask anything from anyone after you until I die."

Qabeesah bin Dhuwaiyb (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) gave Ibn Sa'di two thousand dinars, but he refused to take them and said: I have no need for this. Sayyiduna Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) said to him: I am going to tell you the same thing that the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said to me.
Sayyiduna Khalid bin ‘Adi Juhani (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) say:“Whoever receives some good from his brother without asking for it and without coveting it, then he should accept it and not return it, for it is sustenance that Allah has sent to him.”(Imam Ibn Hibban, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The command that we have been ordered to act upon is to take what is given to a person, and there are two specific things, in the absence of which (taking something from someone) is permissible for a person. Those (two specific things) are asking and coveting. So, for a well-off person who is permanently (well-off), if either of these two things is found in him, then it becomes forbidden for him to take the wealth given to him. This ruling is not for the poor person who is in a state of necessity. Sometimes it happens that it is permissible for a person to take what is given to him, even if there is an element of asking or coveting, and this is in a state of necessity. There are two types of necessity. Such necessity that occurs in the presence of (wealth), and such necessity that occurs in the absence of (wealth). The necessity that occurs in the presence of (wealth) is when a person owns many things of this world (but those things) are other than food and drink, and the person is in a place where food and drink are not sold at all. So, even though he possesses (wealth), his ruling will be that of a person in necessity. Whatever is given to him, it is permissible for him to take it. Even if that person is a beggar or has covetousness, and the necessity that occurs in the absence of (wealth) is obvious. It does not need explanation.

Ibn Sa'di al-Maliki narrates: Sayyiduna Umar bin Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) appointed me as the supervisor for collecting Zakat. When I finished and handed over the payment to him, he ordered that I be given a salary. I said to him: I did this work for the pleasure of Allah and my reward is with Allah. He said: Accept what is being given to you, because during the blessed time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), I also did this work and said the same thing that you have said, so the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "When something is given to you without you asking for it, then use it yourself and also give charity from it."
