It is narrated from Abu Tayyaah: A man asked Sayyiduna Abdur Rahman bin Hanbash (may Allah be pleased with him): When the devils came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), what did he do? He said: The devils descended from the mountains and came down into the valleys to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). Among them was a devil who had a flame of fire in his hand; he wanted to harm the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) with it. But he became overawed and began to retreat (on his own). Jibreel (peace be upon him) came to the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) and said: O Muhammad! Say. The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) asked: What should I say? He said: Say: "I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah (in which there is no deficiency and) which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of everything He has created, and from the evil of that which descends from the sky, and from the evil of that which ascends into it, and from the evil of that which He has created in the earth, and from the evil of that which comes out of it, and from the evil of the trials of night and day, and from the evil of every visitor of the night except one who comes with good, O Most Merciful!" (By reciting this supplication) the fire of the devils was extinguished and Allah Almighty defeated them.

Abu Tiyah says: I asked Abdur Rahman bin Hanbash Tamimi, who was elderly: Did you have the companionship of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? He said: Yes. I asked: What did the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) do on that night when the devils came near him? He said: That night, the devils attacked the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) from various valleys and ravines. Among them was a devil who had a flame of fire in his hand and wanted to burn the face of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). At that moment, Jibreel (peace be upon him) came and said: O Muhammad! Say. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: What should I say? He said: Recite this supplication:“I seek refuge in the perfect words of Allah, which neither the righteous nor the wicked can surpass, from the evil of whatever He has created, and from the evil of whatever descends from the sky, and from the evil of whatever ascends into it, and from the evil of whatever comes at night, except one who comes with good, O Most Merciful!”(As a result,) their fire was extinguished and Allah, Blessed and Exalted, defeated them.

The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Shall I not tell you of something by which you will attain the rank of those who came before you, and those who come after you will not be able to catch up with you, and you will be the best among all the people of your time, except for the one who does the same as you? (That deed is) that you say «سبحان اللہ» ‏‏‏‏, «الحمد للہ» , and «‏‏‏‏اللہ اکبر» thirty-three times after every prayer." This hadith is narrated from Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah, Sayyiduna Abu Dharr, Sayyiduna Abu Darda, Sayyiduna Ibn Abbas, and Sayyiduna Ibn Umar (may Allah be pleased with them). The hadith of Sayyiduna Abu Hurairah (may Allah be pleased with him), which Abu Salih narrated, is as follows: The poor people came to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and said, "The wealthy have taken all the high ranks and everlasting blessings. They pray as we pray, and they fast as we fast, but they have more virtue due to their wealth; they perform Hajj, Umrah, Jihad, and give charity." The narrator says: (the above hadith was mentioned). (Regarding the number of tasbihat) we differed; some said to say «سبحان اللہ» ‏‏‏‏ thirty-three times, «الحمد للہ» thirty-three times, and «اللہ اکبر» thirty-four times (and some said something else). I went to the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and mentioned the whole matter, and he said: "Say each of «سبحان اللہ» ‏‏‏‏, «الحمد للہ» , and «اللہ اکبر» thirty-three times."

Lady Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) narrates: In the last part of his life, the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to frequently recite this supplication:“Allah is Pure with His praises, I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance.”I asked: What is the reason that you recite this supplication so frequently:“Allah is Pure with His praises, I seek forgiveness from Allah and turn to Him in repentance”? The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) replied:“My Lord informed me that I would soon see a sign among my Ummah, and He also commanded that when I see that sign, I should frequently glorify Him with praise and seek forgiveness from Him. Indeed, I have seen that sign (and that is Surah Nasr): ‘When the help of Allah and victory comes, and you see the people entering Allah’s religion in crowds, then glorify your Lord with His praise and seek His forgiveness. Surely, He is ever accepting of repentance.’”

Sayyiduna Abu Dharr (may Allah be pleased with him) says: My beloved (Prophet) (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) commanded me with seven things: (1) He commanded me to love the poor and to keep close to them; (2) He commanded me to look at those who are below me and not to pay attention to those who are above me; (3) He commanded me to maintain ties of kinship even if they turn away from me; (4) He commanded me not to ask anything from anyone; (5) He commanded me to speak the truth even if it is bitter; (6) He commanded me not to fear the blame of any blamer in matters concerning Allah; and (7) He commanded me to recite «لاحول ولا قوة الا بالله» abundantly, for these words are among the treasures beneath the Throne. And in another narration: "These words are a treasure from among the treasures of Paradise."

It is narrated from Sayyiduna Qais bin Sa'd bin 'Ubadah (may Allah be pleased with him) that my father left me with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) to serve him. (One day) the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) passed by me and I had already performed the prayer. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) struck me with his foot and said: "Shall I not guide you to one of the gates of Paradise? (And that is this remembrance) «لاحول ولا قوة الا بالله» (There is no power to avoid evil and no strength to do good except through Allah's help)."
