باب من دعا صاحبه فيختصر وينقص من اسمه شيئا
Chapter: Shortening or altering a companion’s name
Hadith Number: 638
638/827- (صحيح) عن عائشة رضي الله عنها قالت: قال رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم:" ياعائش! هذا جبريل [وهو/1036] يقرا عليك السلام". قالت: [فقلت: ] وعليه السلام ورحمةالله [وبركاته](1)، قالت: وهو يرى ما لا ارى. وفي رواية: ترى ما لا ارى، تريد بذلك رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم).
638/827- (Sahih) From Aisha, may Allah be pleased with her, who said: The Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "O Aish! This is Jibril [وهو/1036] who sends you greetings of peace." She said: [فقلت: ] And upon him be peace and the mercy of Allah [وبركاته] (1). She said: And he sees what I do not see. And in another narration: You see what I do not see, meaning by that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

Chapter: Zahm
Hadith Number: 639
639/830- (صحيح) عن ليلى ؛ امراة بشير تحدث، عن بشير بن الخصاصية. وكان اسمه: زحم. فسماه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم: بشيرا.
639/830- (Sahih) From Layla; the wife of Bashir narrates, from Bashir ibn al-Khasasiyyah. And his name was Zahm. The Prophet, peace be upon him, named him Bashir.

Chapter: Barra
Hadith Number: 640
640/831- (صحيح) عن ابن عباس: ان اسم جويرية كان برة، فسماها النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم جويرية.
640/831- (Sahih) From Ibn Abbas: The name of Juwayriya was Barra, so the Prophet, peace be upon him, named her Juwayriya.

باب أفلح
Chapter: Aflah
Hadith Number: 641
641/833- (صحيح) عن جابر، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال:" إن عشت نهيت امتي_ إن شاء الله- ان يسمي احدهم بركة، ونافعا، وافلح، (ولا ادري قال:"رافع" ام لا؟) يقال: هاهنا بركة؟ فيقال: ليس ها هنا" فقبض النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ولم ينه عن ذلك.
641/833- (Sahih) From Jabir, from the Prophet, peace be upon him, who said: "If I live, I will forbid my ummah—if Allah wills—that any of them name (their children) Barakah, Nafi‘, or Aflah, (and I do not know if he said: 'Rafi‘' or not?) It would be said: Is Barakah here? And it would be said: He is not here." Then the Prophet, peace be upon him, passed away and did not forbid that.

Hadith Number: 642
642/834 (صحيح) وعنه من طريق اخرى: اراد النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم ان ينهى ان يسمى بيعلى، وببركة، ونافع، ويسار، وافلح، ونحو ذلك، ثم سكت بعد عنها، فلم يقل شيئا.
642/834 (Sahih) And from him through another route: The Prophet, peace be upon him, intended to forbid naming with Ya'la, Baraka, Nafi', Yasar, Aflah, and the like, then he remained silent about it afterward and did not say anything.

Chapter: Rabah
Hadith Number: 643
643/835 (حسن) عن عمر بن الخطاب رضي الله عنه، قال: لما اعتزل النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم نساءه، فإذا انا برباح ؛ غلام رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم، فناديت: يا رباح! استاذن لي على رسول الله صلى الله عليه وسلم.
643/835 (Hasan) From Umar ibn al-Khattab, may Allah be pleased with him, who said: When the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, withdrew from his wives, I saw Rabah, the servant of the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, so I called out: O Rabah! Seek permission for me to enter upon the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him.

Chapter: Names of the Prophets
Hadith Number: 644
644/836 (صحيح) عن ابي هريرة، عن النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم قال:"تسموا باسمي، ولا تكنوا بكنيتي؛ فإني انا ابو القاسم".
644/836 (Sahih) From Abu Huraira, from the Prophet, peace be upon him, who said: "Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya; for I am Abu al-Qasim."

Hadith Number: 645
645/837 (صحيح) عن انس بن مالك قال: كان النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم في السوق، فقال رجل: يا ابا القاسم! فالتفت إليه النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم. فقال: يا رسول الله! إنما دعوت هذا. فقال النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم:"سموا(1) باسمي، ولا تكنو بكنيتي".
645/837 (Sahih) From Anas ibn Malik who said: The Prophet, peace be upon him, was in the market, and a man said: O Abu al-Qasim! So the Prophet, peace be upon him, turned to him. The man said: O Messenger of Allah! I was only calling this one. So the Prophet, peace be upon him, said: "Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya."

Hadith Number: 646
646/838 (صحيح) عن يوسف بن عبد الله بن سلام قال:"سماني النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم يوسف واقعدني على حجره، ومسح على راسي"(2).
646/838 (Sahih) From Yusuf ibn Abdullah ibn Salam who said: "The Prophet, peace be upon him, named me Yusuf, seated me on his lap, and wiped his hand over my head."(2).

Hadith Number: 647
647/839 (صحيح) عن جابر بن عبد الله قال: ولد الرجل منا من الانصار غلام، واراد ان يسميه محمدا(قال في رواية هنا: ان الانصاري قال: حملته على عنقي، فاتيت به النبي صلى الله عليه وسلم)، (وفي اخرى: ولد له غلام، فارادوا ان يسميه محمدا] قال:"تسموا باسمي، ولا تكنوا بكنيتي؛ فإني إنما جعلت(وفي رواية ثالثة: بعثت) قاسما، اقسم بينكم".
647/839 (Sahih) From Jabir ibn Abdullah who said: A man from among us, the Ansar, had a boy born to him, and he wanted to name him Muhammad. (In one narration here: The Ansari said: I carried him on my neck and brought him to the Prophet, peace be upon him.) (In another: A boy was born to him, and they wanted to name him Muhammad.) He said: "Name yourselves with my name, but do not use my kunya; for I have been made (in another narration: I have been sent as) a distributor, dividing among you."
