It is narrated from Abu Hurairah, may Allah be pleased with him, that the Messenger of Allah, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "Do you know what backbiting is?" The noble companions, may Allah be pleased with them, said, "Allah and His Messenger know best." He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "It is your mentioning about your brother something which he dislikes." It was asked, "O Messenger of Allah, tell me, if what I say is actually present in my brother?" He, peace and blessings be upon him, said: "If what you say is in him, then you have backbitten him, and if what you say is not in him, then you have slandered him." In another narration: "When you say something about your brother which is in him, then you have backbitten him, and when you say something which is not in him, then you have slandered him." Narrated by Muslim.

Narrated from Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) that a man sought permission to enter upon the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him), so the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "Give him permission to enter, for he is a bad man of his people." When he sat down, the Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) showed happiness on his face and smiled at him. When the man left, Aisha (may Allah be pleased with her) said, "O Messenger of Allah! You said such and such about him, then (when he came) you showed happiness on your face and smiled at him." The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) said: "When did you ever find me to be foul-mouthed? For on the Day of Resurrection, the worst in status before Allah will be the one whom people leave alone to avoid his evil." In another narration: "To avoid his foul speech." Agreed upon.

And committing sins openly is that a person does an act (of sin) at night, then in the morning he goes around saying: O so-and-so! I did such and such last night, even though Allah had concealed it for him, and he spent the night while his Lord had covered him, but when morning comes, he removes Allah's covering from himself." Agreed upon. And the hadith narrated from Abu Huraira (may Allah be pleased with him): "Whoever believes in Allah..." is mentioned in the chapter of Hospitality.
