Abdullah bin Ma’qil narrates: I was present with my father in the company of Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him), so my father said to him: Have you heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“Regret is repentance”? Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas’ud (may Allah be pleased with him) replied: Yes, I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say:“Regret is repentance.”

The above narration is also transmitted with another chain. (
Imam Humaydi, may Allah have mercy on him, says:) The narration that Abdul Karim has narrated to us is more beloved to us, although compared to the narrator named Abu Sa’d, he is a greater memorizer.

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: I was with the Prophet Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him) in a cave, and this Surah was revealed to him: «والمرسلات عرفا» So I learned it from the tongue of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), even though not much time had passed since he had recited it, but I did not know on which of the two verses the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) ended this Surah. «فبأی حديث بعده يؤمنون» "Then in what statement after this will they believe?" Or perhaps it ended on this verse: «وإذا قيل لهم اركعوا لا يركعون» "When it is said to them, 'Bow down,' they do not bow down." Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Meanwhile, a snake came out from a hole in front of us; we got up to kill it, but it entered another hole. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "You have been saved from its harm, and it has been saved from your harm."

Shaqiq bin Salamah narrates: We were sitting and waiting for Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him), when Yazid bin Mu'awiyah Nakha'i came to us and said: "What is the matter?" We said: "We are waiting for Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him)." He asked: "Where do you think he would be?" We said: "He would be at home." He said: "Shall I go and call him for you?" The narrator says: So he went, and after a short while, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) came out and stood by us, and Yazid bin Mu'awiyah was with him. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "I was informed that you were sitting here, but I did not come out to you because I feared that I might cause you to become weary. The Prophet (peace and blessings of Allah be upon him) used to preach to us at intervals of days, because he did not like to make us weary."

Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: The Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) distributed something, so a man said: "This is a distribution in which the pleasure of Allah was not intended." The narrator says: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) has narrated this: I could not control myself. I went to the service of the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and informed him about this matter, so the blessed face of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words) changed color. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: At that moment, I wished that I had embraced Islam on that day (i.e., I was a new Muslim and had not witnessed this). Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) narrates: Then the Noble Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said: "Sayyiduna Musa (peace be upon him) was harmed more than this, but he remained patient."

A‘mash says: I heard Hajjaj bin Yusuf saying: Do not say“Surah al-Baqarah”, Surah so-and-so. A‘mash says: I mentioned this to Ibrahim al-Nakha‘i, so he informed me: ‘Abdur-Rahman bin Yazid told me this, that once he was walking with Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah bin Mas‘ud (may Allah be pleased with him) in the lower part of the valley. When they came to the Jamrah, Sayyiduna ‘Abdullah placed it on his right side and then came opposite to it, then he threw pebbles at it. I said to him: O Abu ‘Abdur-Rahman! People throw pebbles from above. He replied: By the One besides whom there is no deity, I saw the one upon whom Surah al-Baqarah was revealed throwing pebbles from here.

Alqamah narrates: Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) arrived and recited Surah Yusuf. Then a man said to him: "It was not revealed in this way." The narrator says: So Sayyiduna Abdullah (may Allah be pleased with him) said: "May you be ruined" (the narrator is in doubt, perhaps these are the words), "May you be destroyed! I have recited it before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and he said: 'You have recited correctly.'" While both of them were still arguing, Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) sensed the smell of wine from that man. Sayyiduna Abdullah bin Mas'ud (may Allah be pleased with him) asked: "Do you drink wine and deny the Qur'an? I will certainly have you flogged." Then that man was flogged.
